Expert Reviews

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Dreadnought is a 100% Syrah showing ripe blackberry and blueberry preserves on the nose alongside hints of pepper and cloves. Full-bodied, concentrated, spicy and peppery, there is plenty of acid freshness, a medium level of rounded tannins and a long finish. Drink it now to 2018+. Other recent accolades for this vintage: Rating 91 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate Issue #209, October 2013

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Aroma

Typical aromas for Dreadnought Syrah include a smokey peat character that provides a savoury edge to the overt blueberry and pepper aromas, that mix of savoury and sweet that is classic Northern Rhone is style.

Palate

The palate is concentrated and rich but well balanced with vibrant acidity and a streak of minerality – almost a salty character with the wine finishing with a large volume of fine grain tannins.

Medals & Trophies

Silver Medal - Decanter World Wine Award 2013 "Oaky aromas nuanced with black currant leaf and white pepper. Attractive plum fruit, spice and olive complexity. Classically styled."

Winery Profile

Discovered in 1769, over two hundred years in the making, classic wine of the new world.

Over two hundred years after Cook first sighted Man O’ War we were convinced that world class wine could be grown here. Throwing caution to the wind we began planting our first vines in 1993. Today Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate.Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Each block has been meticulously designed with different rootstocks, clones and planting densities to best match the specific terroir on offer.Driven by this blueprint our white varieties have been carefully placed high on the exposed volcanic hilltops of Man O’ War so that they benefit from cooling sea breezes, extending their growing season and giving them great concentration and minerality. While our red varieties are draped down precipitously steep sheltered clay hillsides enjoying the heat and drainage provided, promoting serious intensity and depth.

With the belief that the greatest wines of the world are made in the vineyard, each small parcel of vines are carefully tended and harvested by hand, then vinified separately, fusing classic Old World techniques with innovative New World ideas. Our winemaking team is provided with the broadest possible palette from which to blend world class wines that are unique expressions of Man O’ War. Our wines are presented in two collections that represent our hallmark elegance, balance and texture.
