Wine Summary Image

Syrah is a varietal that pushes the boundaries of what is possible in Central Otago. It requires extended periods of heat to gain optimum ripeness, and as such is planted in minute quantities in only a handful of locations. With gentle handling in the winery, natural fermentation and judicious use of oak we aim to produce wines that are a true reflection of the individual season.

Expert Reviews

New to the Australian market and exemplarily crafted by winemaker Alan Peters-Oswald, this is creamy on entry but is underscored with savoury hints as it travels. NZ Syrah is a very different animal than Shiraz from most Australian regions and should be looked at in its own right. For a start its only 13.4% alcohol. It will develop with age but is drinking very well at the moment. Its an easy 94 and worth the retail price which will be around $30. 94 Points - The Key Review of Wine, Tony Keys. November 2013.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep garnet with youthful purple hues.

Aroma

Complex aromas of game, spice, black olives and dried herbs are accompanied by bright currant and blackberry fruit. Suggestions of dark chocolate and subtle spicy oak blend seamlessly into the background.

Palate

The palate leads off with bramble fruits and spice accompanied by a savoury meaty char. Fine grain tannins and ethereal oak envelop a core of dark berry fruit, leading to a juicy satisfying finish.

Winery Profile

At latitude 45 degrees south, New Zealand’s Central Otago is the southernmost wine region in the world. Alpine mountains to the west, rocky ranges to the south and dry tussock covered hills to the east dominate the landscape. In between all of this grandness, on the lush valley floors, are nestled the Nanny Goat vineyards. This is a region of climatic extremes with typically very hot summers, short autumns and bitterly cold days in winter. The soils are rocky with poor fertility. All of these conditions are perfect for producing world-class Pinot Noir.

Who says you can’t grow Syrah in the deep South? An interesting unusually complex nose with spicy, berried body. Nanny puts some fun and class into wine - Warren Barton, The Southland Times. September 2013
