Wine Summary Image

“A kaleidoscopic sensorial unfolding!”

“Be warned – a deception of approachability invoked via a tightroped/exacting balance and fruited/structural charm.”

“Worth the wait – after a one decade deliberation this wine strenuously asserts Grange’s positioning in the new millennium!”

Peter Gago, Penfold Chief Winemaker

Grange is arguably Australia’s most celebrated wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climates of South Australia. Grange utilises fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes. The result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as one of the most consistent of the world’s great wines. The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-district, blending philosophy.

Expert Reviews

100 Points 2010 holds a privileged position in the 60 year lineage of Penfolds Grange. In the context of recent tastings of many of the greatest vintages, 2010 attains new heights in its depth of black fruit presence and its structural assuredness. I adore 2008 Grange and, tasting them together, 2010 is even deeper and more vibrant, exuding another dimension of distinguished grace, precision, concentration, scaffolded structure and seamless, enduring persistence. There is a coiled reticence to the bouquet, skirting black plum, liquorice and dark chocolate, opening into breathtaking violet fragrance. The palate is unyielding, yet immensely structured. Magnificently voluptuous, yet elegantly coiled and bright. Silky and irresistible, yet untouchable and enduring. Tannins are a revelation, with a finesse and a chalk-fine texture impossible for such a resilient and powerful frame. Penfolds Grange 2010 is definitively on a plane of its own: the greatest young Australian wine I have ever tasted. A blend of 96% shiraz and 4% cabernet, from Barossa (85%), Clare, Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Magill. Rating 100 - Tyson Stelzer, tysonstelzer.com

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Black to the core, purple on the rim.

Aroma

Intense. An immediate barrel-ferment propulsion – sweet and candied, with a peaty, iodine, green olive base. Beneath this, a barely-concealed swirl of Vegemite/yeast extract/concentrated salt-paste - laced wit paprika, oregano flower and thyme.

A slurry of cocoa powder, a scented waft of black pudding, and a splash of nori-roll/sea-spray temporarily balance this aromatic equation. But then, a minute or two later all changes…

Palate

Dense, paste-like texture and weight. A balsamic liveliness/lift/energy is unleashed. Tannins focus on the roof of the mouth, laden with an additional film of (85% cacao) dark chocolate, mocha. A mix of quince and sesame-paste laden with basted meats and saturated stewed plum, boysenberry, blueberry. Tightly bound – wait for decompression! Complete, Confident, Convincing.

Peak Drinking

2018 – 2060

Winery Profile

From humble beginnings in the 1950s, Grange has maintained its place as Australia's most prestigious red wine over five decades. Today, it is a wine of international renown, with each vintage eagerly awaited by collectors both in Australia and overseas.

Penfolds Grange is a wine of extraordinary dimension and power. Richly textured, intensely concentrated and packed with fruit sweetness, these wines, regardless of vintage, require medium to long-term cellaring. They develop into immensely complex, beguiling wines that seduce the senses.

An Australian icon, Grange represents a tradition in winemaking that is totally uncompromising. Grange has bypassed the fads and trends of modern winemaking in the sense that it has maintained an integrity of style and remained true to its origins in the mind of Max Schubert. Penfolds Grange is the quality standard against which all other Australian red wines are judged. To share a mature Grange, 15 to 20 years old, in fine condition, is one of the great wine experiences.

Chris Shanahan, 26 May 2010, The Canberra Times“It has an inky deep colour, overwhelming aroma and flavour impact of ripe, dense, sweet fruit, mouth-flooding tannins, distinctive flavour of American oak and a buoyant lift. This is a great wine of rare dimension. Over many decades, it will mellow and grow paler, becoming more fragile and ethereal.”

Penfolds Bin 95 Grange

The wine market was changing rapidly by the late 1940s, as soldiers returned from the war and new immigrants settled in Australia. Max Schubert, then a young winemaker at Penfolds, returned to Europe after the war to investigate winemaking. The mission was to learn about sherry production, however a side trip to Bordeaux led to Schubert experimenting with a long-lived red wine that he called Grange.

Schubert looks back on the 1950s Grange years as exciting years of discovery, faith, doubt, and ultimately triumph. In contrast, the 1960s were a period of vindication and Grange stole a march on the rest of the Australian wine industry by setting an incomparable benchmark for longevity, concentration and balance.

Penfolds Grange is Australia’s pre-eminent first growth. It is a very perfumed concentrated wine, which combines the intensely rich fruit and ripe tannins of shiraz with the fragrance and complementary nuances of new, fine-grained American oak. Partial barrel fermentation takes place at the tail-end of primary fermentation. It weaves the two elements together producing a meaty complexity and roundness of flavours on the palate.

A portion of cabernet sauvignon is used in some years to enhance the aromatics and palate structure. After vindication the wine is matured in new American oak hogshead for around 20 months. The best vintages last for more than 50 years.

99 Points The 2010 Grange is a 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 96% Shiraz blend made from Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Magill Estate fruit that was aged 17 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. Very deep purple-black in color, this is classic Grange - amongst the finest produced - replete with fresh, vibrant and youthful black fruit notes showing some blueberry aromas and accents of camphor, anise and the slightest floral hint plus a whiff of oak in the background to lend a cedar-laced lift to this textbook Shiraz nose. Medium to full-bodied in the mouth, it is very taut and finely constructed showing typically firm, grainy, uniform tannins, great concentration and wonderful persistence on the finish. If I have any very slight complaint of this near perfect wine it is that it seems a little too clinical and appears to speak less of the land and the heart of South Australia and more of the very skilled winemaking than did the Grange from the magical 2008 vintage.Rating 99 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, eRobertParker.com (OCT/2014)

98 Points Very deep, dark red-purple colour, youthful and bright looking. The bouquet is fresh and vibrant with especially good fruit-oak balance and the oak is not dominant on the bouquet - as it has been so often in the past. Fruitcake, roasted meats, charcuterie and black fruit aromas; hints of fresh tobacco as well. It's full-bodied and dense, concentrated and yet seamless and harmonious. The tannins are fleshy and smooth and well-integrated into the whole. An outstanding Grange, more approachable and in better balance than Grange usually is at release time (and this one is out six months early). 4% cabernet sauvignon - which doesn't show.Rating 98 Huon Hooke
