Penley Estate was established by the Tolley family in Coonawarra in 1988. The Phoenix name recognises the first winemaking company purchased by Douglas Austral Tolley, in 1888. This company began in 1858, and was known as “The Phoenix Winemaking and Distilling Company”, in Stepney, South Australia.

Penley’s Phoenix is an excellent example of the classic Coonawarra cabernet big cassis characteristics with hints of that classic Coonawarra earthiness.

Aroma

Spicy cabernet fruit, a dense ripeness with hints of smoky oak and grape tannin.

Palate

Distinct blackcurrant flavours, lovely soft tannins and a long lingering finish.

Winery Profile

Owner Kym Tolley describes himself as a fifth-generation winemaker,the family tree involving both the Penfolds and the Tolleys. He worked 17 years in the industry before establishing Penley Estate and has made every post a winner since, producing a succession of rich, complex, full-bodied red wines and stylish Chardonnays. These are made from precious estate plantings. A welcome return to form with the ’08 and ’09 reds.
