Winery Tasting Notes

Appearance

The colour is vibrant with good depth in the glass and reddish hues.

Aroma

The aroma is strong with red berry notes with complex black currant leafiness on the bouquet, giving the wine a fresh aroma. The subtle balanced oak imparting a spicy savouriness to the aroma.

Palate

The 2013 Phoenix is a medium bodied wine, with firm and fine tannins that are integrated into the wine creating a very smooth and harmonious texture. Very linear with rustic flavours and great balance. The natural acidity adds some delicate chalkiness and earthiness to the wine which leads to a firm and dry finish.

Food Matching

Enjoy with rib eye steak cooked medium rare preferably still on the bone.

Cellaring Potential

The new French oak is minimal but discernible. The small amount of wood tannin and fruit flavours will aid maturation if required. Best enjoyed for next 1 to 5 years.

Winery Profile

Owner Kym Tolley describes himself as a fifth-generation winemaker,the family tree involving both the Penfolds and the Tolleys. He worked 17 years in the industry before establishing Penley Estate and has made every post a winner since, producing a succession of rich, complex, full-bodied red wines and stylish Chardonnays. These are made from precious estate plantings. A welcome return to form with the ’08 and ’09 reds.

Medium garnet/purple, the 2013 Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon has aromas of red currant jelly, crushed blackcurrants and black cherries with accents of cedar, tobacco leaves and dried herbs with a hint of pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied and showing decent concentration, the palate is framed by chewy tannins and a medium to long finish. Rating 88 - Drink by 2015, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (AUG/2015).
