Wine Summary Image

The fruit for this rich spicy Sparkling Shiraz was selected from a cool climate vineyard near Robe on the Limestone Coast and a Plains Road block in McLaren Vale. The grapes from both vineyards were ripened to their optimum level for varietal flavour, the wine was matured in older oak barriques to maintain primary characters.

Expert Reviews

The wine won't receive serious attention, but if it did there would be a strong argument to allow it to develop in bottle for up to 5 years. The powerful flavours of cool-grown shiraz add significant amounts of spice and licorice to the fruit, and the dosage is not too high. Good value, even if you do drink it tonight. Rating 89 - Drink by 2018, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (MAR/2014).

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Aroma

The wine shows a bouquet of spice, black cherry and mulberry, with hints of cedar.

Palate

The palate is full and generous with great texture and mouthfeel, displaying ripe raspberry, spicy black plum and red currant, with a tinge of white pepper. The finish is long and sustained, and ideal pre-dinner aperitif.

In 1892 Alexander Campbell Johnston planted the first small vine cuttings on his newly purchased 97 hectare property in McLaren Vale, South Australia. Alexander settled with his family on the property and proudly named it ‘Pirramimma’, an Aboriginal phrase meaning ‘the moon and the stars’. More than 115 years and three generations later the Johnston Family still operates one of Australia’s oldest and proudest family owned and run wineries - Pirramimma. Making wines that range from the traditional to the innovative, Pirramimma is pure McLaren Vale. As one of the original landholders in the region the family is committed to its home and the regionally unique wines they produce.

Geoff Johnston, Grandson of Alexander, is the modern custodian of the family heritage. The Johnston family have grown the property from 97 hectares in 1892 to 250 hectares today. The family philosophy is to produce wines from estate grown grapes, ensuring the highest quality standards are met and the unique regional characters are displayed.

2011 Trophy Winner at International Wine and Spirit Competition (London, UK)

The 2007 Pirramimma ACJ has won the coveted Glenelly Trophy for Best Blended Red Wine at the prestigious 2011 International Wine and Spirit Competition. The wine a unique blend of Shiraz, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon has won this fantastic award above all other blended wines from across the globe. Named in honour of Pirramimma founder Alexander Campbell Johnston, the 2007 ACJ is only the second release of this limited production wine, the first being the Gold Medal winning 2004 vintage. Only produced if varietal parcels display outstanding character, the barrel select 2007 ACJ was limited to 500 dozen.

"With 120 years of winemaking history, it is a great achievement from the team to win any Trophy in such a competitive industry, but to win a major Trophy at one of the Worlds most important Wine Competitions is a tremendous result for McLaren Vale and Pirramimma" Geoff said.
