More than 123 years after Alexander Campbell Johnston planted his first small vine cutting, the Johnston family still produce estate grown wines and operate one of Australia's oldest wineries - Pirramimma.

On the 21st of March, we picked this excellent parcel of Shiraz at optimum flavour and hand picked a tiny portion of ripe Viognier. Both varieties were co-fermented on skins for 10 days to extract colour, fragrance and varietal character. Maturation was completed in 90% older French and American oak to retain fruit freshness and 10% new French oak for a touch a savoury spice.

Aroma

This rich and vibrant wine displays an aroma of black olive, raspberry, bramble, prune plum and hints of cedary French oak, complimented by sweet apricot notes.

Palate

The palate exhibits black cherry, cranberry, blueberry and Satsuma plum, with tinges of dates and black briary fruits, all enhanced by firm tannins, subtle nutty/vanilla oak, and a long sustained finish.

Cellaring Potential

Approachable now with aeration or will cellar up to 10 years under the right conditions.

Pirramimma wins Best Australian Producer (the fourth time in six years) PLUS 14 GOLD MEDALS and 12 SILVER MEDALS. This showcase event attracted 11, 232 entries from 1510 wine producers from 41 countries.

In 1892 Alexander Campbell Johnston planted the first small vine cuttings on his newly purchased 97 hectare property in McLaren Vale, South Australia. Alexander settled with his family on the property and proudly named it ‘Pirramimma’, an Aboriginal phrase meaning ‘the moon and the stars’. More than 115 years and three generations later the Johnston Family still operates one of Australia’s oldest and proudest family owned and run wineries - Pirramimma. Making wines that range from the traditional to the innovative, Pirramimma is pure McLaren Vale. As one of the original landholders in the region the family is committed to its home and the regionally unique wines they produce.

Geoff Johnston, Grandson of Alexander, is the modern custodian of the family heritage. The Johnston family have grown the property from 97 hectares in 1892 to 250 hectares today. The family philosophy is to produce wines from estate grown grapes, ensuring the highest quality standards are met and the unique regional characters are displayed.

2011 Trophy Winner at International Wine and Spirit Competition (London, UK)

The 2007 Pirramimma ACJ has won the coveted Glenelly Trophy for Best Blended Red Wine at the prestigious 2011 International Wine and Spirit Competition. The wine a unique blend of Shiraz, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon has won this fantastic award above all other blended wines from across the globe. Named in honour of Pirramimma founder Alexander Campbell Johnston, the 2007 ACJ is only the second release of this limited production wine, the first being the Gold Medal winning 2004 vintage. Only produced if varietal parcels display outstanding character, the barrel select 2007 ACJ was limited to 500 dozen.
