Expert Reviews

Largely ex the Lenswood vineyard, handpicked, chilled overnight; whole bunch pressed, wild yeast-fermented in new and used French barriques; 9 months maturation. Makes its presence felt the first millisecond it enters the mouth, but doesn't threaten. A seamless fusion of white peach, biscuity oak and fresh acidity. James Halliday, Rating 95, 4th August 2015

Winery Profile

5 Star Winery - Halliday Wine Companion

Shaw + Smith began over a long lunch in 1989 when cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith decided to realize a long held dream to make wine together. They specialise in Sauvignon Blanc, a single vineyard Chardonnay, cool climate Shiraz and more recently small batches of Riesling and Pinot Noir.

The Vineyards

M3 Vineyard

Shaw + Smith's 42 hectare M3 Vineyard at Woodside was planted in 1994 and takes its name from owners Michael and Matthew Hill Smith and cousin Martin Shaw. This vineyard consistently produces outstanding Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc with great concentration and fruit purity. All grapes are hand picked. The soils are sandy loam over red-yellow clay with some shale.Average altitude 420 metres.

Balhannah Vineyards

In 1999 Shaw + Smith bought this picturesque 46 hectare property between Balhannah and Hahndorf. In 2000 the winery was built and Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Riesling were planted. All grapes are hand picked. The soil is free draining sandy loam over red clay with underlying quartzite and shale. Average altitude 420 metres.

A low yielding year. “Chardonnay and shiraz were the standout varieties for the season”, says winemaker Adam Wadewitz. The Lenswood vineyard purchased in 2012 is now becoming a more significant component in the wine, “It adds a fineness”, quips Wadewitz, “it brings natural acidity, a back bone, a spine to the wine”. The hand picked fruit comes from a couple of different sites, gets whole bunch pressed and sent to barrel, left on lees for a spell, bottled with a bit of sulphur when it’s ready. “We’re trying to do less really, looking to show off the potential of chardonnay from the Hills”, says Wadewitz.

It tastes like crunchy skinned chardonnay grapes from a cool place. True to the variety, not afraid to be edgy, but also show some finesse of oak handling and a quiet concentration of flavour. Bouquet shows faint nuttiness with green apple, quince, citrus. Fresh fruit flavours are trimmed with fine chalky fringes and gentle nougat and cedar touches. Long in flavour, fine, well done chardonnay. Will cellar well too I suspect. Mike Bennie, Wine Front, Rating 94, 25th June 2015
