Wine Summary Image

The fruit for this wine comes from un-irrigated, hand-pruned and hand-picked vines grown at Skillogalee around 450m above sea level. The wine was vinified in open fermenters and then basket-pressed. No fining was needed. Malo-lactic (secondary) fermentation and maturation took place in predominantly French oak hogsheads for around 24 months,before the separate components were blended and bottled.

Vintage 2012 is known amongst locals as the most stellar red wine vintage in recent memory in the Clare Valley. The vineyards received ample winter rainfall to set them up for a long and mild growing season with flavour and colour development in the berries taking place at a steady and combined pace.

Aroma

This Cabernet blend (Cab Sauv 85%, Malbec 9% and Cab Franc 6%) has a hugely aromatic impact with aromas of cassis, cranberry, sandalwood, sage and roses.

Palate

The palate is generous yet medium bodied, with masses of mulberry, morello cherry, roasted coffee and nutmeg playing starring roles. Whilst enjoyable immediately, the natural acid backbone freshens the wine and the fine-grained, integrated tannins provide the structure that will reward careful cellaring.

Winery Profile

Skillogalee has a small modern, winery, crushing only around 250 tonnes, giving us the opportunity to hand-make individual wines in small batches. Fruit handling and vinification are undertaken using the best of traditional and modern technologies - modern winemaking techniques for whites, to preserve the fruit aromas and flavours, and more traditional techniques for reds - the use of open fermenters and basket pressing to maximise flavour and colour without over-extraction. We focus heavily on gentle fruit handling throughout and our winery hygiene programs are meticulous. In this way, we use the minimum amount of sulphur to keep wines safe from spoilage.
