Expert Review

Grapes were grown on their Gimblett Gravels vineyard for this impressively flavoured Chardonnay. The nose is complex and fragrant displaying white peach, citrus and vanillin oak characters with a touch of mealy notes. It's concentrated and tightly structured, yet generous and expansive, showing silky texture and bright acidity. The length is long and elegantly dry. At its best: now to 2014.Rating 91 - 93 - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit (JAN/2011)

Tasting Notes

Aroma

This is an elegant and sophisticated Hawkes Bay Chardonnay. A lovely combination of citrus and stone fruits make up the grape component. Vanilla and toast flavours are contributed via the barrels. Complexity comes from maturation in cotact with yeast and malo-lactic lees.

Palate

The elegance on the nose is manifested on the palate through a tightness and graininess from the oak. There is a window of richness and sweetness; neatly enhanced through a warm ferment fatness which continues through to the finish.

Winery Information

As a single estate winery, Te Awa cherish their rich diversity that the unique terroir of Te Awa provides. Their philosophy is to achieve balanced wines, reflecting the grapes from which they are made and having the individuality of our vineyard site. Embracing the time proven traditions of the worlds great winemakers, they harvest and vinify the different parcels of our vineyard separately, which gives us small variations in flavour and texture and thus more options when it comes to blending.

Their aim is for a synergistic effect, where the wine will be better than the sum of the individual parts. Once blended, the components marry and age together, evolving towards harmony as one wine - the best possible expression of their vineyards unique character.

Top vintages of this Hawke’s Bay wine are very classy. Hand-harvested in the Gimblett Gravels, the 2007 vintage (4 stars) was fermented and lees-aged for a year in French oak hogsheads and puncheons (25 per cent new). It’s a powerful wine (14.5 per cent alcohol), very sturdy and ripe, with a fragrant, creamy bouquet and deep grapefruit, pear and spice flavours, slightly biscuity and toasty. The 2009 is refined and youthful. Mouthfilling, with ripe grapefruit and subtle oak flavours, it is weighty and finely textured, and likely to unfold well during 2011 5 Stars - Michael Cooper’s Buyer’s Guide to New Zealand Wine 2011
