Aroma/Palate
Colour, flavour and texture should be in harmony in all wines. We seldom see it due to a lack of sensitivity of the winemaker, viticulturist or the demands of the market. Sometimes all three conspire. Dark berry fruits, oyster shell and graphite. Silky smooth on the palate with supple tannins and a lengthy finish.
Winemaking Note
Following old world production techniques often leads New Zealand winemakers astray. Whilst we don’t have our own indigenous varieties, or barrels for that matter, we do have our own unique climate and soils, not forgetting our own micro-flora, in the vineyard and winery. Letting ‘our stuff’ lead the winemaking will ultimately take us to a more interesting place.
As a single estate winery, Te Awa cherish their rich diversity that the unique terroir of Te Awa provides. Their philosophy is to achieve balanced wines, reflecting the grapes from which they are made and having the individuality of our vineyard site. Embracing the time proven traditions of the worlds great winemakers, they harvest and vinify the different parcels of our vineyard separately, which gives us small variations in flavour and texture and thus more options when it comes to blending.
Their aim is for a synergistic effect, where the wine will be better than the sum of the individual parts. Once blended, the components marry and age together, evolving towards harmony as one wine - the best possible expression of their vineyards unique character.
