Wine Summary Image

Established in 1984, Te Kairanga's land was originally owned by the founding father of Martinborough, John Martin, in the late 1800s. The over 130 year-old cottage that still stands on the property serves as both an icon and hospitality center for the winery. The wines come from the 250 acres of sustainably-farmed vineyards planted on ancient riverbeds. While the passion and specialty at Te Kairanga has always been Pinot Noir, they also make small amounts of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Gris.

Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma

Full, rich, and smoothly textured, it offers aromas of lightly roasted cashews, pears, white peaches and a touch of quince.

Palate

On the palate, a lovely even flow leads to a lingering finish with ripe pear, quince, nectarine and savoury flavours coming through in harmony. The wine finishes with a crisp, underlying acidity.

Winery Profile

"tee-kigh-runga" - where the soil is rich and the food is plentiful, Te Kairanga is one of Martinborough's founding vineyards established over 20 years ago. In keeping with the pioneering spirit surrounding the vineyard, a number of Te Kairanga wines have hailed from Martinborough's history and that of its inhabitants dating back to 1879. Our own John Martin Reserve Pinot Noir, known and loved by many, is notably named after the foundingfather of Martinborough - John Martin himself. Likewise the Pinot Runholder is aptly named as a tribute to the runholders of the land back in time.

Distinctively boutique, Te Kairanga was established over 25 years ago and is one of Martinborough’s founding wineries. We have six vineyards here, each with its own distinctive characteristics and suited to different varieties and viticultural practises. Our focus is handcrafted, benchmark wines that showcase old world style with new world flair, and are true representations of the Martinborough growing region.
