First made in 1982, Awatea continues to represent the best of the classic Hawke's Bay Cabernet/Merlot blend. Floral aromas with intense blackberry, currant and dark plum flavours lead to a rich, supple palate with a sustained finish.

Concentrated aromas of blackcurrants, spice and dark, old-fashioned roses define the nose.
Palate
The palate opens with the dense, sweet, dark berry fruits indicative of a great vintage. The focus quickly turns to rich, fine tannins that fill the mouth, leaving a lasting impression of a wine with significant ageing potential.

The ideal accompaniment to classical full flavoured European cuisines, featuring red meat, rich pasta dishes and hard cheeses.

Wine Background
Awatea takes its name from the historic ship SS Awatea (a Maori word meaning “Eye of the Dawn”) that sailed the Auckland – Sydney – Wellington route in the late 1930s. The Awatea was requisitioned as a troop transport in WWII and was sunk off Algeria in 1942.
Te Mata Estate is New Zealand’s oldest winery, dating from the early 1890s. It is a New Zealand family-owned winery – a true estate, specialising in grape growing and winemaking from its nine Hawke’s Bay vineyards. It is acknowledged as one of only five icon wineries in New Zealand.
Under the direction of John Buck, Te Mata Estate has, over nearly thirty years, produced a stunning array of red and white wines including famous labels such as Coleraine, Awatea cabernets/merlots, Bullnose syrah, Elston chardonnay, Cape Crest sauvignon blanc and, launched in 2009, Zara viognier. Te Mata Estate has also developed a unique single vineyard from which it produces its Woodthorpe wines.
Te Mata Estate makes wines from hand-harvested grapes from its own vineyards. These vineyards are all located in Hawkes Bay (within 40 minutes drive of the winery) and under the direct control of Te Mata Estate’s viticultural team.
Total land area: 600 acres (240 hectares). Total planted vineyard area: 300 acres (120 hectares).
