This vitamin-llke, sulphur containing antioxidant (also known as thioctic acid) has proven to be many times more potent than antioxidants such as vitamin C and E. It may even recycle C and E, as well as other antioxidants, enhancing their effectiveness. Because it dissolves in both water and fat, this 'universal antioxidant' is able to scavenge a wider range of free radicals than most antioxidants, the majority of which tend to dissolve in either fat or water, but not both. Alpha Lipoic Acid reaches fatty tissues such as nervous tissue, as well as those made mainly of water, such as the heart. Alpha Lipoic Acid is present in the diet from spinach, liver and brewers yeast but if dietary intake is insufficient, supplementation may become an important option.
