Wine Summary Image

It was a good season for Rose; we had warm days and generally coolish nights which suited the Tempranillo we sourced from Frankland as well as from the Perth Hills. Several different parcels of fruit were selected for the Rosé, then made using different winemaking methods; the early picked fruit (some handpicked & some machine harvested) was crushed and pressed with a short time on skins to pick up some colour in the juice. Some riper picked fruit was handled by the ‘Saignee’ method; the juice being drained from the crusher with just a hint of colour and then fermented at cool temperatures, along with the first portion, to dryness. We’ve bottled this wine early so as to maximise all the delicate fruit flavours.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour:

A very attractive pale dark pink.

Aroma:

Gorgeous cherry fruit aromas with light floral notes..

Palate:

Has delicate, fresh cherry fruit flavours on the palate with a hint of spice and savoury characters. This wine has a beautiful palate weight and great mouth feel; it has a lovely textural quality while still having a dry finish with the tiniest hint of tannin astringency. Like the Rosés from Provence in the south of France, this is a superb wine that can be enjoyed on its own but is definitely good to serve with food.

Best enjoyed as young wine.

Cellar Potential:

Best consumed while young 1 – 2 years.

Winery Profile

Located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, West Cape Howe is the most southerly point, rising some 250 metres above the Southern Ocean. It is thought that the first explorers to this coastline were Dutch seafarers in 1627 aboard their 'Fluyt' class vessel "Gulden Zeepaard" (Golden Seahorse).

The winery is named after this magnificent landmark to pay respect not only to the natural beauty of the region, but also in recognition of the extreme influence of the Southern Ocean on the area's viticulture. The rugged coastline is home to some stunning white beaches, sheltered coves and great rock climbing sites.

West Cape Howe Wines is owned by a partnership including Gavin Berry (until 2004, senior winemaker at Plantaganet), and viticulturist, Rob Quenby. It was founded in 1997 and soon became one of the fastest growing wine brands in Western Australia, now producing around 60,000 cases annually. Over time, it has acquired some of the oldest vineyard resources in the state, giving it unrivalled access to the best and most consistent quality fruit that the cool Great Southern wine region has to offer.

West Cape Howe's driving philosophy is to make delicious wines of harmony, balance, structure and flavour - wines that people love to drink.
