Wine Summary Image

Parcels of fruit were selected from vineyards in the Great Southern and Margaret River regions at optimal maturity and flavour ripeness. The fruit was held cold for a period prior to fermentation to enrich the colour and flavour. A steady fermentation enabled 10 days on skins for optimal colour and tannin extraction. The finished wines were then aged in a combination of new and older French oak for up to 12 months.

‘These wines established our reputation for quality and consistency - year in year out; wines with clean, expressive fruit and compelling value for money.”

Gavin Berry, Winemaker

Expert Reviews

"Full purple-crimson; only the southwest of WA could produce a juicy wine of this quality at this price. It counterpoises juicy red berry fruits with savoury black fruits and fine, persistent tannins. Good now, even better in 10 years (or any time in between)." 94 points - James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion 2014, 10 July 2013

Winery Profile

Located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, West Cape Howe is the most southerly point, rising some 250 metres above the Southern Ocean. It is thought that the first explorers to this coastline were Dutch seafarers in 1627 aboard their 'Fluyt' class vessel "Gulden Zeepaard" (Golden Seahorse).

The winery is named after this magnificent landmark to pay respect not only to the natural beauty of the region, but also in recognition of the extreme influence of the Southern Ocean on the area's viticulture. The rugged coastline is home to some stunning white beaches, sheltered coves and great rock climbing sites.

West Cape Howe Wines is owned by a partnership including Gavin Berry (until 2004, senior winemaker at Plantaganet), and viticulturist, Rob Quenby. It was founded in 1997 and soon became one of the fastest growing wine brands in Western Australia, now producing around 60,000 cases annually. Over time, it has acquired some of the oldest vineyard resources in the state, giving it unrivalled access to the best and most consistent quality fruit that the cool Great Southern wine region has to offer.

West Cape Howe's driving philosophy is to make delicious wines of harmony, balance, structure and flavour - wines that people love to drink.

"A very good shiraz, which offers outstanding value for money. The colour is deep, dark purple - red and it smells of plum jam and sweetly floral notes, turning mulberry-ish in the mouth. It's medium-bodied and slightly lean with good length and a lively freshness. Drink 2013-2018." 89 points - Huon Hooke, Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine, April/May 2013
