Wine Summary Image

Parcels of fruit were selected from vineyards in the Great Southern and fermented separately. The Shiraz saw a period of cold maceration before the start of fermentation, a method used to intensify its rich colour. A steady fermentation enabled 10 days on skins for optimal colour and tannin extraction. The finished wines were then aged in a combination of new and older French oak for up to 18 months. Keeping each parcel separate allowed for final blending of those wines that met the ‘Two Steps’ quality.

Colour

Deep inky red with a medium purple hue.

Aroma

Rich licorice plum with subtle hints of white pepper, beautifully integrated with spicy French oak.

Palate

Rich dark fruit characters displaying hints of licorice and classic white pepper tones. The dusty tannins are well integrated with subtle spicy French oak and well integrated with an intense fruit flavour.

Winery Profile

Located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, West Cape Howe is the most southerly point, rising some 250 metres above the Southern Ocean. It is thought that the first explorers to this coastline were Dutch seafarers in 1627 aboard their 'Fluyt' class vessel "Gulden Zeepaard" (Golden Seahorse).

The winery is named after this magnificent landmark to pay respect not only to the natural beauty of the region, but also in recognition of the extreme influence of the Southern Ocean on the area's viticulture. The rugged coastline is home to some stunning white beaches, sheltered coves and great rock climbing sites.

West Cape Howe Wines is owned by a partnership including Gavin Berry (until 2004, senior winemaker at Plantaganet), and viticulturist, Rob Quenby. It was founded in 1997 and soon became one of the fastest growing wine brands in Western Australia, now producing around 60,000 cases annually. Over time, it has acquired some of the oldest vineyard resources in the state, giving it unrivalled access to the best and most consistent quality fruit that the cool Great Southern wine region has to offer.
