Wine Summary Image

Wynns Coonawarra Estate was founded by pioneer John Riddoch who planted vineyards in 1891, and today is home to both the triple gabled winery and the Coonawarra railway siding. Located on the world famous ‘Terra Rossa’ strip, Wynns is noted for producing fruit of exceptional quality, notably Cabernet Sauvignon.

Completed in 1898, The Siding has a long associated history with Wynns - playing an important role to the fledging settlement of Coonawarra, by transporting around 600 hogsheads a year to Adelaide back in the late 1800s.

Senior Winemaker Sue Hodder says, "the aim of this wine is to deliver a leading affordable Cabernet Sauvignon, showcasing exceptional varietal and regional characteristics of red cherry, mint and dark berry flavours, while an array of gentle tannins will further reward from short to medium term cellaring".

Expert Reviews

Crimson-purple colour; the perfumed bouquet has a striking lavender note, most obvious when the glass is swirled and held some distance away from your nose; the medium-bodied palate has been fashioned with great dexterity, placing the main emphasis on the blackcurrant fruit, but allowing the tannins to reassure you of the potential of the wine if you decide to cellar some.

Rating 95 - Drink By: 2030 James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (DEC/2013)

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

A rich vibrant colour with purple hues.

Aroma

This wine shows classic Coonawarra Cabernet aromas of briary black currant and raspberry on the nose supported by fragrant oak.

Palate

The palate is filled with flavours of raspberry, red fruits, and cedary oak accentuated by a hint of mint. The wine is medium bodied with gentle tannins and finishes with a lovely, soft persistence of fruit. This is a great example of Cabernet Sauvignon with all the right varietal cues on display - mint, brambly notes and brooding darkness, but with reined in tannins making this a delicious drink, ready right now.

Peak Drinking

Approachable in its youth, this wine will benefit from short to medium term cellaring.

Winery Profile

In 1891 the famous triple gabled winery and surrounding vineyards were built and planted by John Riddoch and called the Chateau Camoum. Riddoch’s vineyards are the core of today’s Wynns Coonawarra Estate, with his winery, essentially unchanged, forming the centrepiece of the operation.

Following John Riddoch’s death in 1901 the Coonawarra Estate languished for 50 years until 1951 when Samuel Wynn and Co, the Melbourne-based wine makers and merchants, purchased the winery and vineyards.

After much hard work, over the next 30 years Wynns gradually increased its holdings in the Coonawarra and by 1981 was the largest grower in the district with 440 hectares under vine.

Coonawarra's fame comes mostly from a freakish natural phenomenon called the terra rossa. Meaning literally 'red earth', the terra rossa is a low, cigar-shaped ridge of soil some 15 kilometres long and up to 1 kilometre wide.

Coonawarra - which is an Aboriginal word meaning 'honeysuckle' - is an isolated region 450 kilometres away from Melbourne and 380 kilometres from Adelaide. Coonawarra is renowned for its unique geological and climatic features - ideal for growing vines bearing the highest quality grapes.

Like all great wine regions of the world, Coonawarra's climate is cool and marginal. It is South Australia's southernmost wine region, positioned just 80 kilometres from the chilly southern ocean and cold Antarctic winds. The vines are assured a long, cool ripening period that builds up the intensity of flavours slowly in the grape and ensures a balanced acidity. The resulting wines will always be among Australia's finest for their richness, intensity, flavour and longevity.

I just did a check. You can buy this for significantly less than $20. That’s good buying in anyone’s language.

It has a loveliness, this cabernet. A soft heart. It’s grunty and tannic through the finish but the mid palate is sweet and ripe and perfectly pitched. Blackcurrant, tobacco, black olive, mint. It is a wine of quiet insistence and yet it’s not under-powered. Rating 93+, Drink 2017 - 2024+, Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front (NOV/2013)
