Expert Reviews

"A surprisingly youthful rendition of one of the Barossa’s long-lived flagships, confidently led by Eden Valley cabernet (56%), backed by equal measures of Barossa Valley cabernet and shiraz. Beautifully defined black fruits are propelled by dark chocolate oak (47% new French, Hungarian and American) and magnificent tannin structure, promising decades of potential. Drink to 2036."96 points - Tyson Stelzer, James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2015, 1 August 2014

Winery Profile

Red 5 Star Winery -James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2011

Family-owned and run by Robert Hill Smith, Yalumba has long had a commitment to quality and has shown great vision in its selection of vineyard sites, new varieties and brands. It has always been a serious player at the top end of full-bodied (and full-blooded) Australian reds, and was the pioneer in the use of screwcaps. While its estate vineyards are largely planted to mainstream varieties, it has taken marketing ownership of viognier. However, these days its own brands revolve around the Y Series and a number of stand-alone brands across the length and breadth of SA. Yalumba has been very successful in building its export base. Exports to all major markets.

"Mature Barossa cabernet shiraz. Rich plum, cassis and smoky, meaty notes meet the nose. Oak folds completely into sumptuous fruit; velvety texture and fine, dissolved tannins carry a super-long finish. (Cork; 13.5 per cent alcohol.) Ageing? Drink over five years-plus. Food ideas Roast rib of beef."95 points -

Ralph Kyte-Powell, The Age, 24 June 2014

"Deep red colour with a slight purple tinge. The aromas are of dark cherry and raspberry, with a tinge of herbs and mercifully it's not overtly oaky. The wine is very full-bodied and robust, with tannin aplenty and considerable complexity. It has a touch of elegance and very good length. The wine is full-bodied and forceful with a lot of power. The veritable iron fist in the velvet glove. Rich and dense. Long-term cellaring indicated. An outstanding wine."95 points -
