Voyager Estate Chenin Blanc 2016 (6 x 750mL) Margaret River, WA

Description:

Vintage

The vines enjoyed a near perfect growing season, with warm, dry spring weather and relatively light wind conditions prevailing along the Margaret River coast. The summer conditions were nice and warm without excessive heat, until a curveball arrived during 18 to 20 of January with a rare weather event for this time of the year occurring. This resulted in 80mm of rain falling over the region, which was a timely watering from Mother Nature for the reds - but not so timely for the whites which were only a couple of weeks from harvest. This was followed by some cooler conditions in late January and early February, this combination of events had the effect of delaying the white grape harvest with our first pick of Chardonnay on the February 8, which was one week later than the past few years. Harvest of the whites progressed slowly with the team picking small parcels of fruit each day, with Chardonnay being harvested during mid February to early March followed by Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc during the late February to mid-March period. The 2016 vintage was a very strong year overall for the whites which all displayed bright, intense varietal fruit flavours with excellent natural acidity.

Vineyard

The fruit for our Chenin Blanc is sourced from three Estate vineyard blocks. Voyager Estate has some of the oldest Chenin Blanc vines in Margaret River with one of our blocks being a part of the original 1978 plantings. The vineyard soils are typically gravelly loams with a stony clay subsoil with excellent drainage and good moisture holding capacity, producing vines with exceptional balance. All the vines are carefully hand-pruned, shoot thinned and are cultivated to a target yield of ten tonnes per hectare.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

Bright pale straw green color

Nose

Fresh aromas of pome and tropical fruits with a subtle hint of spice.

Palate

The wine displays flavours of spicy pome fruits with underlying citrus and some tropical fruit nuances. The palate has a nicely balanced weight and a creamy textural element derived from some barrel fermentation, finishing with subtle sweetness balanced by fresh natural acidity.

Style

The wine is made in an early drinking, soft, fruit-driven style with great intensity of flavours, a subtle textural complexity from a small barrel fermented component and balanced by fresh acidity with a hint of sweetness.

Food Match

The wine partners beautifully with mildly-spiced Asian dishes or fresh seafood

Winery Profile

Voyager Estate is located in the premium wine producing region of Margaret River, Western Australia. Latest statistics show that, although only producing 4% of Australia's wine by volume, Margaret River wines account for 23% of the country's premium wine production. Voyager Estate is proud to be among the select wineries that contribute to this production. Our oldest vines date back to 1978, just over 10 years after vines were first planted in the area. When current owner, Michael Wright, took over the property in 1991, he set out to expand it and develop a visitor destination that would be a showcase for the region. He also set out to ensure that, above all else, the quality of wine being made at Voyager Estate would always be the best that nature, expertise and pure hard work could provide. We leave it for wine lovers and our visitors to judge for themselves.
