The Derelict Vineyard Grenache 2015 - A wet winter ensured good sub soil moisture and set up the vines well with healthy canopies. Spring was very dry with above average temperatures, a heavy downpour in January was a welcome relief. Mild conditions during the ripening period produced wines that show an abundance of spicy fruits with great colour and richness. Vintage started on 30 January, the earliest start on record by one day.

Sticks and Stones Tempranillo 2014 - A wet winter ensured good sub soil moisture and set up the vines well with healthy canopies. Spring was very dry with above average temperatures, a heavy downpour in January was a welcome relief. Mild conditions during the ripening period produced wines that show an abundance of spicy fruits with great colour, richness and balanced tannins. Vintage started on 30 January, the earliest start on record by one day.

Laughing Magpie Shiraz Viognier 2014 - The season began well with average winter rainfall, Summer conditions were significantly warmer than average with two heatwaves through January testing the limits of the vines. Following the heatwave was rain and cool weather, which helped slow down ripening, and allowed flavour development to catch up to sugar ripeness. White wines from this vintage are fruity and very flavoursome, as are reds with ample tannin to match.

Cenosilicaphobic Cat Sagrantino Cinsault 2011 - There was ample winter and spring rain which provided good sub soil moisture and resulted in healthy canopies and good vigour. Summer conditions were very mild. Grapes ripened gracefully with only a few small rain episodes, enough to keep the vines fresh and vibrant. Rainfall was only a little over average for the first months of the year.

Bonsai Vine GSM 2016 - The season began well with average winter rainfall, Summer conditions were significantly warmer than average with two heatwaves through January testing the limits of the vines. Following the heatwave was rain and cool weather, which helped slow down ripening, and allowed flavourdevelopment to catch up to sugar ripeness. White wines from this vintage are fruity and very flavoursome, as are reds with ample tannin to match.

The Galvo Garage Cabernet Blend 2013 - 'Garage wines' is a term used to describe wines that are produced in the back sheds of French winemakers, who make small batch wines of the highest quality.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

The Derelict Vineyard Grenache 2015 - Plum, blueberry, raspberry on the nose. The palate, whilst generous in fruit, remains medium bodied. Chalky tannins paired with succulent acidity. Further ageing will build ever increasing layers of complexity and texture. 14.5% Alcohol.

Sticks and Stones Tempranillo 2014 - Medium bodied with blue fruits, spice, and a little hint of clove. Waxy, smooth and rounded. It is slightly more on the savoury side with vanilla and some residual oak present. Good length, generous and mouth filling.

Laughing Magpie Shiraz Viognier 2014 - Loads of plum and black berry on the nose, with the small Viognier component adding exotic notes of spiced apricots. There's lots of ripe plum flavours, alongside graphite and dried herbs. It's a luscious, soft wine, finishing with restrained tannin and moderate acidity.

Cenosilicaphobic Cat Sagrantino Cinsault 2011 - Dried fruits... prune, raisin and muscatel, matched with walnut, straw, sun baked earth and fresh leather. Passing hints of perfumed flowers a throwback to its more youthful days. Whilst the mid palate has eased somewhat, the tannin structure remains true to Sagrantino form, firm and savoury, like ultra-fine emery paper.

Bonsai Vine GSM 2016 - This wine is showing the hallmarks of the warm, early 2016 vintage. It's full bodied and mouth-filling with luscious dark plum and mulberry flavours. The tannins are quite soft with spice and a little alcohol heat contributing to the finish. This is a drink now, fruit driven wine, well suited to food or without.

The Galvo Garage Cabernet Blend 2013 -Savoury, spicy and elegant, a lovely blend of fresh fruits and leafy earthiness. The aromas and flavours upon opening the bottle appear brooding and savoury. Lots of cedar, mushroom, nutmeg and baked capsicum. The mid palate has a rich, juiciness about it evoking images of plums and creme de cassis.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

5-star James Halliday rated winery. d'Arenberg Celebrates 100 Years in 2012

d’Arenberg was established in 1912 when the teetotalling Joseph Osborn purchased a 65 hectare property in the northern part of McLaren Vale containing established vineyards, stables and a homestead. Joseph was soon joined by his son Francis Ernest Osborn who left medical school for a life on the land. Father and son expanded the vineyard holdings to 78 hectares, selling grapes to local wineries until the winery facilities were finished in 1927.

In 1943, third generation Francis d’Arenberg Osborn (universally known as d’Arry) joined the business at age 16 to assist his ill father. d’Arry assumed full control of the business in 1957 when his father passed away, and in 1959 he created the d’Arenberg brand and bottled the first vintage under the now famous red stripe.

While the world around them battled two world wars, survived the Great Depression and underwent unprecedented social and technological change - four generations of the Osborn family have worked the property and shaped the family business into its current form.

d’Arenberg now exports to over sixty countries and is one of Australia’s most revered wineries, with two wines in the Langton’s Classification of Australia Wine and a top rating in the Australian Wine Companion.

d’Arry handed over the winemaking duties to his son, Chester Osborn in 1983 upon his graduation from a winemaking degree. Chester has spent his time at the winemaking helm driving a focus on premium wines. He has been steadfast in maintaining the techniques used by his forefathers and honouring the old vine vineyards planted by them.

Chester is keen to take the 100 year celebrations to the world in 2012.

“We will be hosting dinners and parties all over the world,” he said. “We want to involve as many people as possible next year, we can’t think of a better excuse to have a party.”
