d'Arenbergs Originals Red Mix (12 x 750mL) McLaren Vale, SA

Description:

4 x Custodian Grenache 2015 - A wet winter ensured good sub soil moisture and set up the vines well with healthy canopies. Spring was very dry with above average temperatures, a heavy downpour in January was a welcome relief. Mild conditions during the ripening period produced wines that show an abundance ofspicy fruits with great colour and richness. Vintage started on 30 January, the earliest start on record by one day.

4 x The High Trellis Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 - The season began well with average winter rainfall, Summer conditions were significantly warmer than average with two heatwaves through January testing thelimits of the vines. Following the heatwave was rain and cool weather, which helped slow down ripening, and allowed flavour development to catch up to sugar ripeness. White wines from this vintage are fruity and very flavoursome, as are reds with ample tannin to match.

4 x The Footbolt Shiraz 2016 - The season began well with average winter rainfall, Summer conditions were significantly warmer than average with two heatwaves through January testing the limits of the vines. Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Custodian Grenache 2015 - The Custodian Grenache is known for its purity of fruit and the 2015 is no exception. Mulberry, plum, raspberry, rhubarb and blueberry. Pretty and confectionary but with an added layer of complexity that sits comfortably beneath the a fore mentioned fruits. Baking spice and baked earth. The palate is at once both lively and vibrant but with a generosity through mid palate texture. The length of the wine is supported by long chalky tannins. A wine that punches well above its weight. The Custodian can be enjoyed as a fresh, young Grenache but will be enhanced by a few years of careful cellaring rendering the wine more complex in flavour and seamless in structure. 14.5% Alcohol.

The High Trellis Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 - This wine has a pretty nose, with lifted cassis and blueberry aromas. The palate is medium bodied and fresh, showing mulberry, black cherry and sage. There's nice fruit intensity, with vibrant acidity and plenty of spice. The finish is long and mouth-watering. 14.5% Alcohol.

The Footbolt Shiraz 2016 - This is a great value comfort red. It's reflective of the warm 2016 vintage with plum, black fruits and liquorice. It's quite complex for a wine at this price point with a good backbone of acidity and attractive earthy undertones. The oak is well integrated with medium level tannin, resulting in a wine that drinks well now but will also cellar for the next 5-10 years. 14.3% Alcohol.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

5-star James Halliday rated winery. d'Arenberg Celebrates 100 Years in 2012

d’Arenberg was established in 1912 when the teetotalling Joseph Osborn purchased a 65 hectare property in the northern part of McLaren Vale containing established vineyards, stables and a homestead. Joseph was soon joined by his son Francis Ernest Osborn who left medical school for a life on the land. Father and son expanded the vineyard holdings to 78 hectares, selling grapes to local wineries until the winery facilities were finished in 1927.

In 1943, third generation Francis d’Arenberg Osborn (universally known as d’Arry) joined the business at age 16 to assist his ill father. d’Arry assumed full control of the business in 1957 when his father passed away, and in 1959 he created the d’Arenberg brand and bottled the first vintage under the now famous red stripe.

While the world around them battled two world wars, survived the Great Depression and underwent unprecedented social and technological change - four generations of the Osborn family have worked the property and shaped the family business into its current form.

d’Arenberg now exports to over sixty countries and is one of Australia’s most revered wineries, with two wines in the Langton’s Classification of Australia Wine and a top rating in the Australian Wine Companion.

d’Arry handed over the winemaking duties to his son, Chester Osborn in 1983 upon his graduation from a winemaking degree. Chester has spent his time at the winemaking helm driving a focus on premium wines. He has been steadfast in maintaining the techniques used by his forefathers and honouring the old vine vineyards planted by them.

Chester is keen to take the 100 year celebrations to the world in 2012.

“We will be hosting dinners and parties all over the world,” he said. “We want to involve as many people as possible next year, we can’t think of a better excuse to have a party.”
