Wine Summary Image

Graveyard Vineyard is the jewel in the Brokenwood crown, responsible for the company's flagship white and red wines.

The Hunter savouriness continues on the palate. Lively red fruit characters supported by fine grained tannins from both the fruit and oak. A long finish and seamless structure giving what the late Len Evans called ‘line and length’.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

Excellent mid to deep colour with bright purple tints on the rim. The result of a cooler year but Hunter reds are never really black in colour.

Aroma

Strong lifted fruit aromas of red cherry and sweet earthy. As a young wine the oak (nearly all French) is up front with briar-like bramble characters and vanillin sweetness. This will settle into the wine with some bottle age.

Palate

The Hunter savouriness continues on the palate. Lively red fruit characters supported by fine grained tannins from both the fruit and oak. A long finish and seamless structure giving what the late Len Evans called ‘line and length’. Easily sits alongside the great fine structured Graveyard’s of the past three decades.

Food Matching

Osso bucco & oven roasted goat.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Graveyard Vineyard is the jewel in the Brokenwood crown, responsible for the company's flagship white and red wines. The vineyard was initially planted with Shiraz vines in 1970. With extremely heavy clay soils, yields are low, but fruit flavour is intense through employment of meticulous vinification techniques. The plans from the original cemetery, dating back to 1882, which occupied the land are displayed in the Brokenwood tasting room. The Graveyard Vineyard currently stands at some 14 hectares under vine.

Brokenwood’s committed to a program of regional blending from 1978 in an attempt to even out some of the more difficult Hunter Valley vintages as well as continuing a long held tradition in Australian winemaking.

Brokenwood's Single Vineyard philosophy has grown to capture the essence (terroir to the French) of our premium sites throughout Australia. The first single vineyard selection from the Graveyard Vineyard was in 1983. Since then our Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz has gained considerable international recognition. The Langton’s Classification of Distinguished Australian Wine has it as the highest rated Hunter Valley red wine, in the “Outstanding” category.

Young Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz typically shows gingerbread, blackberry aniseed fruit, savoury oak and floral, herb garden notes. The opulent gamey, French-polish characters develop with time, bringing a rich palimpsest of aromas and flavours. This is one of Australia’s most interesting and characterful shiraz wines.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2009 Graveyard Shiraz offers pronounced notes of warm black cherries, mulberries, menthol, aniseed, crispy pork skin and cloves. Medium-bodied, it has wonderful concentration of berry and spice flavors, crisp, seamless acid, medium-firm grainy tannins and a long finish with lingering notes of anise and menthol. Drink this one 2014 to 2024.
