The 1997 Grange (a blend of 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon) looks to be a classic Grange, although slightly softer and more forward than the backward 1996. The saturated purple-colored 1997 offers a gorgeously sweet nose of blackberry liqueur, cherries, camphor, chocolate, plums, and mocha. The wine is opulently-textured, extremely soft, layered, and seductive, with Grange's tell-tale personality well-displayed, but in a seamless, seductive style. This is a superb Grange that can hold its own against the more heralded 1996. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2022. - Robert M. Parker, Jr, The Wine Advocate
Penfolds Grange Bin 95
Max Schubert's Grange is a name synonymous with all things great in Australian wine. The 1995 Penfolds Grange is deep crimson in colour and is still showing plenty on the nose, including scents of the herb garden, blackberry & spice. Elegantly structured but very well concentrated, ample amounts of primary blackberry and raspberry are counter pointed by more developed characters of cedar, spice, truffle and softening, crumbly tannin. If opened before 2020 it should be carefully decanted.
Penfolds Grange 96
A truly great year produced a truly great vintage of this Australian classic. Choc-berry, plum and oak on the nose unfold into dark plums, liquorice, prunes, cherry and so much more in the mouth. The fine tannins are icing on the cake. This is one of THOSE Granges for a reason. A wine that will live for decades.
Penfolds Grange 97
Penfolds Grange is an Australian institution that is said is responsible for the quality wine industry that we enjoy today here in Australia. From humble beginnings in the early 1950's to the icon it has become today, Penfolds Grange is engrained into the wine psyche of wine lovers across the world. The vision of Max Schubert has borne an Australian legend that is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. A multi-regional masterpiece that shows power, concentration and balance to showcase the very best in Australian wine. 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon make up the 1997 Grange that is born out of a difficult vintage and the prowess of John Duval and his team can be seen in what is still a magnificent and what will be a long lived Grange.
Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.
Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.
Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.
If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.
