Wine Summary Image

With each vintage release the cool-climate Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz provides an interesting counterpoint to the more opulent and richly concentrated warm-climate Kalimna® Bin 28 Shiraz. Bin 128 comprises fruit

sourced from the unique cigar-shaped terra rossa soils of Coonawarra, a region that exemplifies the perfume, transparency and seductive nature of cool-climate red table wines. Coonawarra has remained the primary source of Shiraz fruit for Bin 128 since the inaugural release of the 1962 vintage. In order to further enhance the regional qualities of Bin 128, the wine is matured in a mixture of new and seasoned French oak hogsheads for 12 months, a method that was refined during the 1980’s when the transition was made from American to French oak.

2013 delivered an impressive Coonawarra vintage. Vines were in good health entering the growing season thanks to sufficient soil moisture profiles and warm, consistent spring weather. Budburst was early and fruit

set was even and successful resulting in a high number of berries per bunch. Significant bunch thinning was required at this stage to reduce yields and ensure the crop maintained intensity and concentration of flavour. Warm weather continued throughout December and January with a number of hot days proving to be the catalyst for what was a rapid veraison and an early start to vintage. A cool to mild Autumn ensued, providing late ripening varietals such as Shiraz and Cabernet the perfect conditions to achieve optimal sugar/acid balance and phenolic ripeness. Yields for the 2013 vintage are in line with the average for Coonawarra and the overall fruit quality is excellent, comparable to the much lauded 2010 and 2012 vintages.

Expert Reviews

Penfolds new release tastings have now been scheduled to August, and although 128 has already been in the market for five months, the additional time since its release has certainly helped it, now accurately displaying the black plum skin and cracked pepper definition that flatters Coonawarra shiraz. Its framed neatly in dark chocolate oak and finely textured yet confident tannins of seamlessly woven integration. An impressive release for Bin 128, with a strong future before it.

Rating 94 - Tyson Stelzer - 2015

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

Deep dark crimson.

Aroma

Intriguing Bin 128 and Coonawarra markers ascend almost immediately; florals, black pepper, cola. diplomatically sanctioned by a custodian Penfolds imprint. Cedary, spicy oak and the faintest suggestion of a BBQ char? Or, maybe not?! Lively red-curranted fruits garnished with a sprinkle of white chocolate dust.

Palate

Medium to full-bodied. Fine, grainy (tight) tannins mesh with black and red cherry fruits and savoury aniseed flourishes. Supportive French oak affords length, definition and cohesion.

Maturation

12 months in French oak hogsheads (26% new, 41% 1-y.o., 33% 2-y.o.)

Peak Drinking

Now – 2025

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.

Whenever you buy wine there is an inherent risk, as wine is a perishable good regardless of whether it is sealed under cork or screwcap. At GraysOnline we minimise the risk to you by providing as much information as possible regarding the provenance of the wine we sell.

We take the time to individually inspect each bottle and photograph it so you know exactly what you are buying. All Private Cellar wine stored at GraysOnline is kept in a temperature controlled wine storage area. Any wine that doesn’t meet our quality standards will not be sold.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
