Wine Summary Image

Clonakilla is best known for putting the Australian town of Canberra on the map as a wine producing region. It was the brainchild of Irish immigrant John Kirk, who moved to Canberra in 1971, purchased a farm on 16 hectares (40 acres) of land and began to plant vineyards. The first plantings were of Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz and, today, also include Viognier, Pinot Noir, Semillon and Chardonnay.

The Canberra district, as part of the wider Southern New South Wales zone, has a relatively cool climate compared to much of the rest of Australia. Clonakilla's vineyards are divided into two sections: the elevated vineyards, which produce grapes with austerity and florality, and the vineyards on the plains, which produce fruit that is more powerful and concentrated. The diversity of these plots give Clonakilla a wide range of flavor characteristics to draw from.

Shiraz was first planted at Clonakilla in 1972. It was traditionally blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, as was the fashion in Australia at the time. However, by 1990 it was found to be performing so well in the vineyards that the winemakers decided to bottle it separately. In 1992, after John Kirk's son had visited the Rhône Valley, the winemakers at Clonakilla decided to try and co-ferment Shiraz alongside Viognier as they did in the northern Rhône. Today this Shiraz – Viognier blend is the prestige cuvée of the estate, and the grapes that produce this wine come from the finest plots in the Clonakilla Murrumbateman vineyards. The two grapes are always co-fermented and the resulting wine is rich, deep and dark with notes of white pepper, black fruits and sweet white flowers.

The Murrumbateman vineyard is also well suited to Riesling, as its granite soils and cool climate ripen the grape perfectly. In 2015, the 40th vintage of Clonakilla Riesling from the Murrumbateman vineyards was released.

An interesting innovation of Clonakilla is the release of its Viognier Nouveau, first seen in the 2014 vintage. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and then released without age, in a fresh and vibrant style.

Expert Reviews

Deep garnet purple colored, the 2009 O’Riada Shiraz (co-fermented with 5% Viognier) has a fragrant nose of black raspberries, crushed black cherries, dark chocolate, cloves and just a hint of torn mint leaves. The palate is nicely balanced with a medium to full-bodied, crisp acid, great concentration and a long finish that straddles spice and fruit. Drinking now, it should cellar nicely to 2019+. - The Wine Advocate

Winery Profile

Red 5 Star Winery - James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion 2014

The indefatigable Tim Kirk, with an inexhaustible thirst for knowledge, is the winemaker and manager of this family winery founded by Tims father, scientist Dr John Kirk. It is not at all surprising that the quality of the wines is excellent, especially the Shiraz Viognier, which has paved the way for numerous others to follow, but remains the best example in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
