Wine Summary Image

Sometimes having mutliple fruit sources can be of benefit even to producers like Henschke. The year was cooler than average, with the coolest January on record slowing development, and sporadic rains in the Barossa. Eden Valley was generally drier, but in both cases the harvest was a long, drawn out affair, and required keen vineyard management to get ripe fruit, and avoid powdery mildew, particularly in the Barossa. And even still, the 92 Keyneton Estate was good enough to win multiple gold medals at some of the best wine shows in the country. When you know how to make good wine, you know how to make good wine.

Expert Reviews

Medium to full red-purple. A clean, noticeably ripe red berry/raspberry bouquet with subtle oak. The palate is fruit-driven, generous and fleshy; both the oak and tannin contributions are soft. Rating 92, Drink by 2002, Tasted Sep 1994, James Halliday

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

A classic wine of Henschke made from Shiraz 70% Cabernet Sauvignon 25% and Malbec 5% grapes grown in Eden Valley and the Barossa Valley.

This estate blend provides a complexity of rich fruit flavours and superb balance from the combination of these low yielding, ungrafted, dry grown varieties.

A harmless crust may develop in the bottle due to minimal handling during the winemaking process.

The Henschke family have been winemakers at Keyneton for five generations, with a proud heritage and philosophy for outstanding quality,

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Henschke is one of the longest established family names in the Barossa and the Australian wine industry. Johann Christian Henschke first planted vines in Keyneton in 1861, producing his first commercial vintage in 1868.

The tradition of quality winemaking has passed down through the generations – today seeing Stephen Henschke and his wife, Prue, as winemaker and viticulturist respectively.

Awarded "International Red Winemaker of the Year" in 1996 at the London Wine Show, Stephen and Prue were in 2006, awarded Gourmet Traveller WINE magazine's "Winemaker of the Year" in recognition of winemaking excellence in both red and white wines. These Awards recognise the consistent and continuing success of this remarkable couple.

Prue has, for the last 18 years, explored and now employs both organic and biodynamic strategies to maximise the potential for the fruit from these unique vineyards to fully express their individual terroirs.
