Expert Reviews

Gold & 95 Pts - Halliday Rating.

From a single block, crushed and destemmed, matured in 100% new French oak for 18 months. It is a tribute to the power of the fruit that it has been able to stand alongside the oak, the combination absorbing the tannins. Will be very long lived.

  • James Halliday, 1 August 2020.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

COLOUR: Deep rich ruby with bright, youthful purple highlights.

NOSE: Intense and abundant ripe black fruit aromas of cassis, mulberry and blackberry fill the glass. There is an almost liquored quality to the aromas, such is their intensity and richness. Creamy and spicy overlay of vanilla and clove spice contributed by maturation in high quality French Oak hogshead adding finesse to its

richly polished fruit aromas.

PALATE: Generous, mouth filling and full bodied, the palate is saturated with complex black fruit

flavours that are both silken and rich. Serious structure with a brooding intensity that holds well for it’s long term cellaring ability. Dark chocolate and espresso notes add further savoury complexity to it’s powerful firmly framed fruits. Finely judged acidity draws it all together giving wonderful length and liveliness to what is an impressively powerful complete McLaren Vale Shiraz of the highest order.

FOOD MATCH: This wine is crying out for meat! Bistecca Fiorentina with all of the trimmings.

CELLARING: 8 - 20 years.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

For such a young winery, Mitolo’s history is rich. It’s one studded with success, wide acclaim, and – most importantly – truly memorable wines. But that’s only to be expected from a winery which, since the very first day, has been motivated by three potent words:

Purity. Elegance. Power.

Those were the guiding principles Frank Mitolo wrote down when he created the winery in 1999. With his Italian heritage and a family history of working the land, Frank was only interested in pursuing excellence. And the results were there immediately in the release of the first Mitolo wine - the 2000 G.A.M. - named after Frank’s children Gemma, Alexander and Marco.

Attracted by this commitment to only create wines of outstanding quality, acclaimed winemaker Ben Glaetzer joined Mitolo as a partner in 2001. With grapes sourced from two of Australia’s premier wine regions, Mclaren Vale and the Barossa Valley, Frank and Ben now work tirelessly to surpass their already impressive achievements. Mitolo Wines, praised by some of the world’s toughest critics, are now enjoyed in more than 20 countries around the world.

And that is just the start.

Provenance; “Place of origin; derivation”

  • The history of the ownership of an object, especially when documented or authenticated. Used for Artworks, Antiques, and Wine.
  • The records or documents authenticating such an object or the history of its ownership.

Whenever you buy wine there is an inherent risk, as wine is a perishable good regardless of whether it is sealed under cork or screwcap. At GraysOnline we minimise the risk to you by providing as much information as possible regarding the provenance of the wine we sell.

We take the time to individually inspect each bottle and photograph it so you know exactly what you are buying. All Private Cellar wine stored at GraysOnline is kept in a temperature controlled wine storage area. Any wine that doesn’t meet our quality standards will not be sold.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
