Krug `Clos d'Ambonnay` 2002 (1 x 750mL), Champagne France.

$3,999

House of Krug chose to create Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 2002 because the year 2002, marked by the generosity of the yields, succeeded in offering ideal conditions for beautiful grapes, with the promise of revealing the full potential of this walled plot.

The climate of the year 2002 was generous, consistently mild and relatively dry. The high point of this exceptionally clement year was its long summer of warm days and cool nights that offered the ideal conditions for grape maturation.

After14 years in Krug's cellars, it reveals an extraordinary finesse.

The House of Krug’s unique craftsmanship has revealed a rare Champagne from a remarkable terroir, the Clos d’Ambonnay. This tiny walled plot of 0.68 hectares is located in the heart of Ambonnay, one of the most distinguished villages for Pinot Noir grapes in Champagne and the main source of Pinot Noir for the House since its very earliest years.

On the palate, the elegant structure reveals a tremendous fullness and intensity enhanced by a very long finish with a final hint of citrus fruits.

The Wine Advocate 99/100

The Wine Advocate - After the 1995, 1996, 1998 and 2000 vintages, the 2002 Blanc de Noirs Brut Clos dAmbonnay is the fifth edition of this splendid but rare and expensive Pinot Noir. Sourced in a tiny, walled 0.68-hectare (1.7-acre) plot on a deep stratum of chalk, the 2002 offers a deep, ripe and highly elegant nose with very fine cherry and red fruit aromas in the beautifully vinous Krug style. On the palate, the 2002 is terribly fresh and finessed, highly aromatic and very mineral, with great structure and a very, very long and tensioned finish. This is a taut and expressive yet highly finessed Clos d'Ambonnay that is shining brighter and becoming more and more complex the more time it has to breathe. Breathtaking maturity, creaminess and a brioche-flavored taste of dried and candied fruit characterizes this mouthfillingly round and intense Clos dAmbonnay whose vinous charm and depth is teasingly attractive.

Tasted in Reims, April 2018. Stephan Reinhardt - 29/06/2018

Winery Tasting Notes

At first sight, a bright and luminous golden colour redolent of ripe wheat.

On the nose, aromas of gingerbread, candied orange peel and hints of hazelnut.

On the palate, the elegant structure reveals a tremendous fullness and intensity enhanced by a very long finish with a final hint of citrus fruits.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Small but important Champagne house founded in Rheims in 1843 by Johann-Joseph Krug, who was born in Mainz, Germany, in 1800. By 1893 the firm occupied its current modest cellars, around whose courtyard the Krug family still live. Krug does not make an ordinary non-vintage champagne but specializes exclusively in prestige cuvées, of which the multi-vintage Grande Cuvée is the flagship. Consistently producing champagne that is among the most admired in its region of origin, Krug is the only house to persist in barrel fermentation of its entire production of base wine, in old 205-l/54-gal casks. Wines from at least six and sometimes nine different vintages make up the blend for Grande Cuvée, one of the most distinctive and long lived of champagnes. Grande Cuvée, with new packaging and a special bottle, succeeded the rather fuller-bodied Private Cuvée as Krug's most important product in 1979. In 1971, Krug acquired and replanted the Clos du Mesnil, a walled vineyard of less than 2 ha/5 acres. Its Chardonnay grapes provide one of Champagne's very few single-vineyard, or cru, wines of which the 1979 vintage was the first. Small quantities of the finest vintage Krug are released as Krug Collection about ten years after their initial release. Although the firm is run by members of the fifth and sixth generation of champagne-making Krugs, it has been owned by LVMH since 1999.
