Winemaking and Viticulture

Hands-on viticultural practice is key to the quality of the fruit for this wine. Vines receive a mix of spur and cane pruning to two canes and shoots are thinned to promote even ripeness and concentrated flavours. Matthews Lane and Dillons Point Vineyards are in Marlborough’s famed Wairau Valley, which in 2013 started the growing season with cooler temperatures. However, when flowering occurred in early December, temperatures were two degrees higher than the average. Summer enjoyed long hours of sunshine with little rain, and as a consequence the vines were happy and healthy. While the region had long sunshine hours, the temperatures weren’t too hot, which meant fruit was able to ripen beautifully retaining flavour and acidity. Hand harvesting commenced early April 2013 and continued over multiple days to ensure optimum fruit ripeness.

Giesen created this exclusive international Sauvignon Blanc style and we have been refining it since the inaugural 2009 vintage release in 2010. The wine is crafted to show a richer expression of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and is made to showcase cellaring potential. Complexity, depth of aroma and flavour are a result of low yielding vines, hand harvesting and barrel fermentation with wild yeast as well as extended maturation on lees.

After hand picking, the fruit was whole bunch pressed to enhance flavour and retain acidity and purity. 80% of the free run juice was put in tanks before gravity filling second and third use 1000 litre German oak Fuder barrels with the remainder going to older French oak barriques. Fermentation was left to happen naturally with wild yeasts to add extra texture and build depth and length. The August Sauvignon Blanc 2013 was bottled in early 2014 and has been maturing since then. It will continue to reward cellaring for another 10 years.

Expert Reviews

"2013 Vintage: Another high-end Sauvignon Blanc that sees some oak aging, this is a rich, ripe wine, loaded with nectarine and citrus fruit. The oak framing is barely noticeable, but serves to highlight the silky texture and adds a pleasant grilled note on the long finish. March 2018" Rating 92 -JOE CZERWINKSI - WINE ENTHUSIAST MAGAZINE

"2013 Vintage: This distinctive wine is named after the Giesen brothers’ grandfather, August (pronounced ‘Ow-goost’) Giesen. Hand-picked and barrel-fermented, it is a commanding, weighty wine (14.5% alc/vol), complex and dry, with highly concentrated tropical-fruit flavours, slightly nutty, tightly structured and long. Maturing very gracefully, it’s currently in full stride. "MICHAEL COOPER

Winemakers

Two boys with itchy feet and a penchant to travel set off from Germany and found themselves in New Zealand. Sons of a stone mason, they were planning to follow the family enterprise but on a whim, because it reminded them of home, they purchased land and planted a vineyard just outside of Christchurch. People said they were just a little bit nuts and the area was far too marginal to make wine.

But hey they’re German and really understand what cold is! Younger brother Marcel took himself to winemaking school and four years later joined Theo and Alex on the South Island to start making wine from their vineyard. They may not have followed the family trade but they certainly adopted the family business philosophy - as their father always said, if someone gives you an order, take the order! And so they set out to identify new vineyard locations and stumbled on the Wairau Valley of Marlborough. Theo says, “Only passion produces excellence"… and if their track record is anything to go by, it also creates wines which people across the world know and love.

Vineyards

Sitting in the top right-hand corner of New Zealand’s South Island, Marlborough is framed by picturesque waters and snow-capped mountains. Its highly sought-after Wairau Valley is an ancient river bed nestled between two mountain ranges and bordered to the North by Cook Strait. It’s a finite sub-region within the acclaimed Marlborough wine growing belt. The Giesen brothers own 720 acres of vineyard and continue to maintain long term supply contracts with some of the Valley’s best growers.

They have now embarked on a new path, ripping out a Sauvignon Blanc vineyard and leaving the land fallow for two vintages before replanting a wholly organic, close planted pinot noir vineyard. As is the New Zealand way, Giesen is certified in sustainable viticulture and reinvesting back into their vineyards for the future.
