Harvested at optimum condition fermented using selected strains of yeast. Portions of this wine were aged on oak for 8 months. This wine went through partial MLF fermentation on yeast lees. Fined using milk products

Vintage Conditions

The 2015 season started drier than usual with typically good temperatures from December through to February. Around 16th to 18th March the edge of a tropical cyclone made its presence felt and about 50mm of rain fell in Hawke’s Bay. Immediately after the rain, some very cool southerly winds dried the vineyards out perfectly. The next three weeks saw almost no rain and ripening continued well. Cool dry weather followed right up until the end of harvest on the 24th April. Harvest began with Chardonnay around mid-March and the fruit benefited greatly from another two weeks on the vine.

Expert Reviews

Full, light golden yellow colour, paler on the rim. The nose is softly full with fresh aromas of citrus fruit and yellow stonefruits overlaid by spicy oak, unfolding subtle nutty and creamy barrel-ferment elements and some chalky mineral nuances. Medium bodied, the palate is elegant and penetrating with intense citrus and stonefruit flavours along with bold, nutty and spicy oak. This is fine in proportion and the mouthfeel features a refined textural line, enlivened by crisp and refreshing acidity. This has vitality, energy and tension, and the wine carries to a lingering finish with plenty of spicy and toasty oak. This is an elegantly proportioned, citrussy Chardonnay, overlaid by spicy oak, with fine textures and brisk, refreshing acidity. Serve with grilled and roasted seafood and poultry dishes over the next 3+ years. Chardonnay fruit predominantly from Puketapu, fully barrel-fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 10 months in approx. 35% new oak with minimal lees work, avoiding MLF. Batch No. 5CHHB. 17.5/20 Oct 2016 17.5/20 - Raymond Chan

Winery Profile

Winemakers

Two boys with itchy feet and a penchant to travel set off from Germany and found themselves in New Zealand. Sons of a stone mason, they were planning to follow the family enterprise but on a whim, because it reminded them of home, they purchased land and planted a vineyard just outside of Christchurch. People said they were just a little bit nuts and the area was far too marginal to make wine.

But hey they’re German and really understand what cold is! Younger brother Marcel took himself to winemaking school and four years later joined Theo and Alex on the South Island to start making wine from their vineyard. They may not have followed the family trade but they certainly adopted the family business philosophy - as their father always said, if someone gives you an order, take the order! And so they set out to identify new vineyard locations and stumbled on the Wairau Valley of Marlborough. Theo says, “Only passion produces excellence"… and if their track record is anything to go by, it also creates wines which people across the world know and love.

Vineyards

Sitting in the top right-hand corner of New Zealand’s South Island, Marlborough is framed by picturesque waters and snow-capped mountains. Its highly sought-after Wairau Valley is an ancient river bed nestled between two mountain ranges and bordered to the North by Cook Strait. It’s a finite sub-region within the acclaimed Marlborough wine growing belt. The Giesen brothers own 720 acres of vineyard and continue to maintain long term supply contracts with some of the Valley’s best growers.

They have now embarked on a new path, ripping out a Sauvignon Blanc vineyard and leaving the land fallow for two vintages before replanting a wholly organic, close planted pinot noir vineyard. As is the New Zealand way, Giesen is certified in sustainable viticulture and reinvesting back into their vineyards for the future.
