Wine Summary Image

The first Old Block was created in 1980 by Barossa icon Robert O’Callaghan from a single vineyard planted in 1912. It soon outgrew the original block to become a representation of Old Vine Shiraz from the entire Barossa region, including the elevated Eden Valley.

With an average vine age of 88 years across its 30 vintage history, Old Block has always paid homage to the intensity, complexity and majesty of Old Vine fruit. When winemaker Stuart Blackwell took over as the Old Block custodian in the eighties, he firstly set about understanding Barossa’s most precious assets, before he looked to evolve the style of St Hallett’s flagship wine.

While vintage variation is evident through the history of the Old Block Shiraz, the wine displays finesse and elegance, even in the most extroverted of years.

To qualify for Old Block, fruit must come from vineyards planted on their own rootstock and in 2015 there was not a vineyard younger than 80 years of age included in the blend. Unique sites in the warmer Barossa Valley contribute a rich foundation while the adjacent higher altitude and cooler Eden Valley provides seamless tannins and lifted aromatics.

The intensive selection process for final Old Block parcels begins in the vineyards through to regular individual barrel tasting throughout its maturation. Each batch is kept separately in stainless steel fermenters and managed by a variety of techniques, including "pumping over" and "drain and return" to enhance colour, flavour and tannin extraction from the skins.

Winery Tasting Notes

The 2015 Old Block Shiraz has all the hallmarks we expect from this wine: full bodied textural mouthfeel, immaculate oak and fruit flavour integration and a supple persistent finish. The acid and tannin balance that underpins the wine will stand it in good stead to cellar for quite some time.

If stored correctly this wine will age gracefully over the next 30 years.

Winery Profile

In the heart of the Barossa Valley, Australia’s best known wine region, lies St Hallett, one of the country’s premier wine producers. Established by the Lindner Family in 1944, for many years St Hallett’s winemaking focus was, like many local wineries, on producing fortified wines. However during the seventies and eighties St Hallett turned to explore the true potential of the Barossa through premium table wines. This has resulted in St Hallett’s elevation as one of Australia’s best producers.

St Hallett is renowned for crafting full-flavored, textured wines entirely from Barossa Valley fruit and is credited with producing benchmark wines of the region such as the iconic St Hallett Old Block Shiraz, made from vines aged up to 100 years old.
