Wine Summary Image

A blend of our top Chardonnay vineyards (these are also used in the Stonier label blend), typically built around the KBS vineyard, with other single release vineyards making up the balance. Each vineyard component for the Reserve, as well as for the single vineyard Chardonnays, is whole bunch pressed with separation of pressings if needed, with no enzyme addition, and fermented in mostly puncheons.

A blend of KBS (50%), Thompson (25%) and equal portions of Lyncroft and Jimjoca vineyards (12.5% each). Each component was fermented in puncheons (25% new, with balance in 2 to 4 year old barrels). Almost 70% of components were allowed to undergo MLF. Blended together after 7 months and put back to the same barrels for a further month. Bottled in December, 2016.

Winery Tasting Notes

The 2018 Reserve Chardonnay is a blend of three very special vineyards; Gainsborough Park (50%), KBS (30%) and Stonier’s original Thompson Vineyard (20%), representing vines between 27 and 40 years old.

The slightly warmer 2018 vintage has produced a lovely rounded and flavoursome Chardonnay, with more white plum and peach, rather than the normal citrus lemon. There is some nice puckering, savoury firmness, with a prominent creamy texture, thanks to some extra lees stirring, leading to quite a delicious wine

Winery Profile

Stonier are pioneers of the Mornington Peninsula where they first planted Chardonnay in 1978 and Pinot Noir in 1982. Stonier achieve wines of the highest quality through continual improvements in viticulture and attention to detail in the winery. In each of the Stonier wines, Mike Symons looks for that extra degree of varietal definition and site expression. His aim is to continue to develop wines with a regional style, refined structure and seamless complexity.
