Expert Reviews

Huon Hooke - 96 Points

"This is a rich but refined style, a glorious wine with honey and butter nuances along with nougat and toast. It's delicate, crisp, lively and dry at the finish; a wine of focus and refinement, and great intensity. Superb line and length. It's just emerging from its shell and will age superbly. (The vineyard is high at 300-350 metres altitude and is a cool, south-facing site)"

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Pale straw with trace green.

Bouquet

Attractive notes of lemon curd, nougat and white flowers dominate, with underlying subtle French oak spice and mineral wet slate. Pure and refined, yet powerful in fruit intensity.

Palate

Classic Upper Yarra Chardonnay characters of lemon curd and citrus rind with underlying nougat and mineral slate. The palate is fine, pure and long and finishes with juicy, pithy citrus acidity. A wine that will reward careful cellaring.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Established in 1985 by James and Suzanne Halliday, Coldstream Hills is one of Australia’s most respected producers of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Situated in the cool and beautiful Yarra Valley, about one hour’s drive east of Melbourne, Coldstream Hills’ steep, close-planted vineyards have become a signature of the region.

Coldstream Hills maintains its small winery essence with the wines being hand-made, mainly using open fermenters for the red wines, while the white wines are barrel-fermented.

Inspired by Burgundian techniques, winemaker Andrew Fleming’s goal is to make wines that not only reflect the potential of the Yarra Valley, but demonstrate regional expression, finesse and length.

"It's an elegant chardonnay with lactose, stone fruit and spice notes running effortlessly through the mouth, nashi pear flavours bursting through the finish. It's good now; it'll be better in a year or three."
