Wine Summary Image

The wine was made with a responsive winemaking approach to preserve fruit purity. Fermentation in Potter (static) and open fermenters, with gentle extraction of flavours and texture through pumping over twice a day and hand plunging. Ferment lasted around 7-10 days. The skins were then pressed and wine allowed to settle before being transferred to barrel for 12 months.

The 2012 Knappstein Shiraz displays typical Clare Valley style and texture.

Aroma

The perfumed nose reveals an array of red cherries and purple fruit mixed with exotic spices and a touch of forest floor earthiness.

Palate

Vibrant red berries, blackberries and spices layer the palate. The texture is lithe and firm with fine-grained tannins providing a backbone for the flavours to wrap themselves around. A wine of lifted vibrancy and tremendous persistence.

Cellaring

This wine will reward ageing for up to 8 years.

"Clare Valley shiraz doesnt get the accolades it deserves - riesling seems to get all the glory. Flavours and aromas of plums, meat, blackberry, cherry, chocolate, liquorice and spice are complex but familiar, rather than challenging. Whats impressive about this is the way it flows through the mouth. Its silky, with energetic acid thats bright and a good match for the rich, dense flavours. Firm, grippy tannins and good length.
