Winery Tasting Notes

It’s the little things in life that count and it’s the littlest sheep that help make Babydoll wines. Our sustainable collection of wines are pure and intense with plenty of character, just like the Babydoll sheep we named them after.

These tiny sheep keep our vineyards tidy year round because they’re too small to reach the grapes. Using one of nature’s mowers means our wines are better for the environment and taste better too. Celebrate life’s little moments with Babydoll wines.

Cellaring Recommendation: Enjoy now, or cellar up to 2 years.

VINTAGE SUMMARY

The 2019 growing season in Marlborough was a hot and dry one. We received small amounts of rain around the end of December, but then no further until late February. These rain events had very little impact on soil moisture levels, but helped to replenish our rivers, setting us up nicely to see us through to harvest. Vintage started in mid-March and it provided us with incredibly stable weather. This meant we could pick blocks at their optimal ripeness. The resulting Pinot Gris is focused, with lifted aromatics and a beautiful concentrated mouthfeel.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Babydoll wines come from New Zealand’s leading grape growing regions, Marlborough and Hawke’s Bay. Everything we do in the winery and out in the vineyards is low impact, focused on sustainable winemaking methods. All our wines are crafted to capture distinctive varietal characters and complexity creating the pure and intense flavours our Babydoll wines are known for.

Our award-winning Babydoll wines are sustainable and vegan friendly, crafted from NZ’s leading wine growing regions.

Marlborough

Based at the North Eastern end of New Zealand’s South Island, Marlborough is one of New Zealand’s sunniest and driest areas, providing a climate of warm days and cool nights.

This means we get a long, slow ripening period and fruit that is fresh, clean and intense with acidity levels that are naturally higher. Marlborough is known internationally for producing a truly unique expression of Sauvignon Blanc. More recently, the region has also become famous for the ripe, fruit forward flavours of its Pinot Noir and aromatics.

Hawke's Bay

Hawke’s Bay, on the east coast of the North Island, is New Zealand’s oldest wine region. The region has an uninterrupted winegrowing tradition stretching back to 1851.

It is home to more vineyards than any New Zealand wine region except Marlborough. The long sunshine hours in Hawke’s Bay make it the ideal place to grow later ripening grape varieties like Merlot, but is also renowned for white varieties such as Chardonnay.  The terroir in Hawke’s Bay typically creates fruit that can be crafted into wines of great finesse and elegance.
