Wine Summary Image

Topaque (previously known as Tokay) must be one of Rutherglen's best kept secrets. Sweet, luscious, complex and elegant it is a wine usually served as an after dinner digestive but is equally at home accompanying a range of dessert options as well as full flavoured cheeses. It can provide an interesting alternative when served chilled as a pre-dinner aperitif or in the place of Oloroso sherry with a rich winter soup.

Campbells Topaque

Topacque was previously known as Tokay. In 2005, Hungary claimed Intellectual Property rights to the name Tokay and since then the Australian wine industry commissioned a research project to identify alternative names for its much loved tokay, headed by chairman of the Rutherglen Muscat and Tokay network Colin Campbell. Five years on, Topaque has been officially registered as the new name for Tokay. The name was a natural extension of the word Topaz, intentionally conveying all of the same precious attributes as the golden stone - rich and golden in hue, a wine associated with beauty and rarity, with an equally rich, indulgent flavour to match.

Winery Profile

Campbells winery and vineyards are situated in the historic Rutherglen Wine Region of North East Victoria.

Brothers Malcolm and Colin are the fourth generation to carry on the Campbell tradition started by their great grandfather John Campbell in Rutherglen in 1870. Together with their wives Jenny and Prue, they have forged a strong reputation for Campbells as a benchmark Rutherglen wine producer.

The brothers are an ideal team with Malcolm as viticulturist and Colin as winemaker. They have 160 acres of vineyard all within the historic Rutherglen Wine Region and are a true estate grown and bottled operation.

This means we have the ability to nurture our wines from vine to bottle. As Colin says, “Our wines are like our children, we bring them into this world and take great pride and joy in holding their hands and watching them grow”.

Malcolm's approach in the vineyard is quite simple, “Quality even at the expense of quantity is our aim. We assist nature, we don't seek to dominate her.”

Colin believes his role as winemaker is to maximize and protect the natural fruit flavours. His skill is in making wines with structure and balance that can confidently be aged; a hallmark of Campbells Wines.

Today the fifth generation of Campbells is adding their enthusiasm and skills. How excited would their great great grandfather John Campbell be to see this dedication to the Campbell name!

As brilliantly balanced and poised as ever, it's concentrated, seamless, persistent, poised and fresh. Apricot jam and marmalade flavours are kept lively by fresh orange rind notes with the aged complexity of rich toffee providing depth.Rating 94 - Wine 100 (JUN/2010)

This is an excellent example of the Rutherglen tokay style. It has the classic fruitcake and milky tea aroma, with plenty of caramel. It suits gentle chocolate desserts.Greg Duncan Powell, Grazia

An inviting toffee/butterscotch and cold tea nose leads on to a silky, voluptuous palate with an oloroso sherry type of rancio and a fresh cut of acidity that really balances the wine and legthens the finish.Sally Gudgeon, Divine Food, Wine & Cigars #41 (DEC/2005)
