Wine Summary Image

Tyrrell’s Special Release is reserved for unique parcels of fruit that in a particular vintage have those qualities and point of difference to warrant being bottled and released on their own.

The vineyard blocks used from this are predominately from our Weinkeller vineyard, which in many years previously had gone into the Vat 9 blend. A tiny amount of Stevens Shiraz was used to top up the blend. Matured in mostly older large French Oak casks (2700L) along with some 4th use puncheons (500L).

THE STORY OF THE SPECIAL RELEASE RANGE

Our Special Release range showcases wines that are limited production, one-offs, trial batches, or just anything unique or different. You never know what you might see in this range and just because you see something here once, there’s no guarantee you’ll see it here again

Winery Tasting Notes

Vineyard

Fruit sourced from our Signpost and Mathews Blocks, off the Short Flat Vineyard, made up 55% and the balance came from Black Ridge.

Vintage Conditions

The growing season for the 2015 vintage saw a dry winter and spring which was broken by good rains in early December. Moderate summer temperatures and some rain at vintage delayed ripening slightly and the reds were picked about one week later than the year before.

Winemaker’s Notes

Predominately from our Black Ridge vineyard, the grapes were fermented in the traditional open top concrete vats and were pumped over three times daily. After fermentation the wine was transferred into mostly older French oak casks (2,700L) for maturation until bottling in September 2016.

Tasting Notes

A youthful colour with a lifted red berry and subtle lift of spice. The palate is only medium bodied but shows the pedigree of the vineyards it is drawn from with its persistent length. A sweet fruit core with the oak being a minor part of the wine and sitting delicately in the background and the acidity giving the wine freshness and adding to the length on the palate.

Brand Profile Image

English immigrant Edward Tyrrell established Tyrrell's Wines in 1858 in the lee of the Hunter Valley's Brokenback Range, New South Wales. This land has become recognised as home to some of the Hunter Valley regions finest vineyards, and the basis for development of one of Australia's most successful privately owned wine companies.

Today, Tyrrell's are a truly national wine company, premium vineyards extend from their legendary home in the Hunter Valley to other distinguished grape growing regions of Australia including McLaren Vale in South Australia and Heathcote in Victoria.

Fourth generation family member and Managing Director, Bruce Tyrrell heads this winemaking company that boasts well established, popular and highly recognisable wine brands that are exported to over 30 countries worldwide. His children, the fifth generation of the Tyrrell family, are involved in the family business, illustrating that this iconic Hunter Valley winery will continue to be Australian owned well into the future.
