Wine Summary Image

The Stevens “Glenoak” vineyard is situated on a combination of light sand and red clay soils. The vineyard is dry grown with the earliest plantings being 1911.

A semi-mature Hunter Semillon with a prominent citrus fruit profile. This wine already shows all the characteristics of a semi mature Hunter Semillon, with its wonderful balance between youth and age. A core of citrus fruit, with the palate just starting to fill out with some bottle age and the acidity beginning to soften into what is a seamlessly structured wine.

THE STORY OF THE SINGLE VINEYARD RANGE

The same soil, same rainfall and same temperatures of a single vineyard produce a consistency of flavour throughout the wine. Our Single Vineyard wines are only made in years when nature contrives to produce fruit of such outstanding quality that our winemakers will set parcels aside to be separately bottled.

In 1993, Bruce Tyrrell struck a deal with the Stevens family to use two of their iconic vineyards. It was, and still is, a deal sealed by a handshake. With some planted in 1867, these may be the oldest producing vines in the Hunter.

Expert Reviews

Gold & 95 Points - James Halliday, Published 01 August, 2019

A famous wine in the context of the Tyrrell's semillon portfolio, a wine of long standing and - curiously - the only single vineyard semillon to be machine-harvested. It has a distinct citrus core allied with minerally acidity, and responds well to lengthy cellaring.

Winery Tasting Notes

Vineyard

The Stevens “Glenoak” vineyard is situated on a combination of light sand and red clay soils. The

vineyard is dry grown with the earliest plantings being 1911.

Vintage Conditions

2014 was another strong Semillon vintage in the Hunter Valley. Dry, warm conditions that were similar to 2003 meant cropping levels were much smaller than average and produced wines with robust flavours and softer acids.

Winemaker’s Notes

After a relatively cool fermentation, the wine spent a minimal time on yeast lees before being bottled early to maintain its freshness. No oak fermentation or maturation.

Tasting Notes

The nose shows fresh citrus and floral characters associated with the Stevens vineyard. A palate which is dominated by lime characters with a mineral edge and a spine of fresh acidity.
