Expert Reviews

International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC), UK Shiraz Trophy, Gold Outstanding 2018

Almost opaque and with an intense perfumed nose. Freshly picked black fruits with well integrated spicey oak and mocha notes are well supported by a great tannic structure and freshness. The finish is complex and long.

93 Points James Halliday Wine Companion, AU 2019 Edition

Open fermentation with hand pumpovers for 8-9 days. Basket pressed to 50% new French hogsheads for 20 months. Slightly unexpected aromas greet you here, with blackcurrant and truffle more immediately obvious than the typically ripe regional fruit characters which sit behind. Dense rather than brawny on the palate, with a juicy quality and a fresh, tangy feel about the tannin. Oak seems to kick in on the finish. Will be interesting to follow its development.

97 Points Decanter World Wine Awards, UK Platinum Medal 2018

Rich, ripe, intense cherry stone, sweet spices, light toast, dry blueberry and meaty hints, lots of very impressive forward dark fruit on the palate with hints of mocha, very fine tannin and wonderful palate length.

Winery Tasting Notes

Appearance

Brick red in colour with youthful crimson hues.

Nose

Richly hedonistic, the nose jumps out of the glass, vigorously capturing the alluring aromas of dark chocolate, coal tar, exotic spices and complimentary French oak char.

Palate

A wine of tremendous concentration, complexity and understated elegance, the palate brims with riper plums fruits, dark chocolate and tar nicely paired with classy French oak and polished tannins that carry over in the mouth well after the wine has been consumed. A wine made for the ages.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Kilikanoon Wines is a boutique winery with an international reputation, located in the heart of South Australia’s stunning Clare Valley. Since 1997 and his first Clare Valley vintage, founder and winemaker Kevin Mitchell has produced wines of individuality with strong regional and varietal definition. Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and now Hermitage terroir is all important, especially for their Shiraz, Riesling, Grenache and Cabernet single varietals.

Like many Australia winemakers Kevin Mitchell is highly trained in both the scientific and artistic sides of winemaking. He also comes from a long tradition of grape growing in South Australia’s beautiful Clare Valley, where grapes have been grown and wine made since the 1850s.

The first Kilikanoon release was in 1998, with 1997 vintage Shiraz, Cabernet, Grenache and two 1998 Rieslings. Since that time Kevin has continually refined his skills and has produced a wide portfolio of Kilikanoon wines from some of Australia’s finest terroir.

Kilikanoon’s philosophy is to make the best wines from the best grapes, no matter where they are, so recently we went to France! We make wine in two regions- the Loire Valley and the Rhône Valley.

In late 2007 Kilikanoon, along with partners Janet Holmes à Court and Greg and Kerrie Paramor acquired Seppeltsfield in the Barossa Valley, one of Australia’s most revered and historic wineries, established in 1851 and the home to one of the world’s finest collections of barrel-aged fortified wines, including the unique unbroken collection of Vintage dated 100 year old Para Tawny (port) dating back to 1878, when the first wines were laid down, not to be bottled for 100 years. They are delighted to celebrate our first decade. The next looks to be just as exciting.

Kilikanoon has been recognised both in Australia and internationally, receiving high praise from some of the world's most respected wine critics. The 2002 Clare Valley Wine Show chaired by prominent Australian wine writer and judge, Huon Hooke, propelled Kilikanoon into the spotlight, winning 6 of the 7 trophies awarded. Going from strength to strength, the Oracle Shiraz has twice won 'Best Shiraz' at International wine shows, while more recently, James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion named Kilikanoon 'Winery of the Year' in 2013. In 2014, Kevin Mitchell was inducted into the inaugural Clare Valley Hall of Fame as Winemaker of the Year.

A 5 Star Winery rated by James Halliday.
