Wine Summary Image

The Dimchurch Shiraz is the more archetypal Barossa Shiraz from the North Barossa Vintners portfolio. While I would describe this as the more fruit forward of our Hoffmann/Dimchurch premium project, the 2009 is dense and concentrated, showing its ability to age gracefully. At 6 years old it is necessary to have the wine decanted for at least 3 hours before its depth becomes evident.

Ripe, rich 2009 Barossa Shiraz is wine for the long haul. Big, soft tannins and firm, natural acidity will see to that. It may take 20 years or more for the wines to reach full maturity. In the short term, Dimchurch 2009 Barossa Shiraz will greatly benefit from a few hours in the decanter after opening.

Expert Reviews

From the Hoffman vineyard at Ebenezer, and spent 4 years in 100% new French oak before this selection was made. It hardly needs be said this is a monumentally full-bodied wine, crammed with every conceivable flavour. In its unique way, it is balanced, but will only have a niche market - given the tiny amount made, this won't be an issue. The leviathan bottle has a good quality cork, with no irregularities.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour:

Opaque crimson red-black.

Aroma:

Initially, top notes of nectarine and ripe apricot give way to maraschino cherry and molasses. As the wine begins to open up dark red berry fruit emerges, supported by a solid whiff of cedar oak vanillin.

Palate:

Primary flavours of rich, dark fruitcake dominate. The mouthfeel is textured, soft, and unctuous on the mid-palate. This overall fruit impression is balanced by a distinctive mineral, slightly bituminous edge. These flavours are supported by solid acidity which provides focus for the long finish.

Winery Profile

Chris Ringland - Shiraz

At a little over seven acres and at 1,500 ft above sea level, Chris Ringland has restored the Shiraz vineyard, which was planted in 1910. It took him 10 years of pruning and re-trellising to get the ancient vines back into sustainable shape.

Because he has never had Phylloxera in South Australia, thanks to a 120 year quarantine by the wine industry funded Phylloxera board, the vines survive on their own roots. This enables them to attain a great age, while still remaining productive. As the most senior vines begin to decline, they are rejuvenated with younger growth material through the ancient technique of layering. Thus, the original root systems are maintained.

To sustainably manage the vines, less is better. Chris doesn’t disturb the soil with tillage. He prunes the vines hard and feeds them gently during the growing season with a spray of natural nutrients. As soon as the grapes begin to colour, the entire vineyard is covered with bird net, to prevent damage to the fruit and to enable it to achieve full ripeness in pristine condition.

Typically the wine is deep in colour, with dark berry, paneforte, expresso and roasted chestnut aromas. The palate is plush and concentrated with blackberry, mocha, paneforte, spicy flavours and dense, fine chocolaty tannins. Despite the opulence, flamboyance, richness and concentration, the wine has superb percussion and freshness.

Deep garnet-purple colored and redolent of pepper and ripe black fruit aromas with nuances of violets, cigar boxes, cloves and coffee, the 2009 Dimchurch Shiraz is positioned one pricing level down from the Hoffman Vineyard. In the mouth, it has a big, rich and concentrated, full-bodied frame that shows Ceylon tea and very spicy flavors before finishing long. This wine is gregarious and opulent at once.
