Wine Summary Image

his restricted release wine is named in honour of our founder, Alexander Campbell Johnston, who over 124 years ago planted his first small vine cutting in iron laden, rich red soil near the township of McLaren Vale. The Johnston Family still produce estate grown wines and operate one of Australia’s oldest wineries – PIRRAMIMMA.

Only produced if selected parcels display outstanding varietal and regional characters. The exceptional 2018 vintage provided such fruit for our sixth ACJ release of 500 dozen. The wine is a blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon from our Basket Weave block, 21% Shiraz from the War Horse block, 11% Petit Verdot from the Siberia block, 8% Tannat from the Olive block, 6% Merlot from our Katunga vineyard and 6% Malbec from OTC.

Winery Tasting Notes

The bouquet displays briary blackberry, violets, Morello Cherry and Kalamata olive with hints of subtle cedary oak and black plum. On the palate intense black cherry and boysenberry are complemented by hints of musk and liquorice, all enveloped in fine grained savoury French oak. The wine has a beautifully integrated seam of ripe tannin and long sustained finish. Aerate extensively to drink now or will age gracefully with correct cellaring.

In 1892 Alexander Campbell Johnston planted the first small vine cuttings on his newly purchased 97 hectare property in McLaren Vale, South Australia. Alexander settled with his family on the property and proudly named it ‘Pirramimma’, an Aboriginal phrase meaning ‘the moon and the stars’. More than 115 years and three generations later the Johnston Family still operates one of Australia’s oldest and proudest family owned and run wineries - Pirramimma. Making wines that range from the traditional to the innovative, Pirramimma is pure McLaren Vale. As one of the original landholders in the region the family is committed to its home and the regionally unique wines they produce.

Geoff Johnston, Grandson of Alexander, is the modern custodian of the family heritage. The Johnston family have grown the property from 97 hectares in 1892 to 250 hectares today. The family philosophy is to produce wines from estate grown grapes, ensuring the highest quality standards are met and the unique regional characters are displayed.

2011 Trophy Winner at International Wine and Spirit Competition (London, UK)

The 2007 Pirramimma ACJ has won the coveted Glenelly Trophy for Best Blended Red Wine at the prestigious 2011 International Wine and Spirit Competition. The wine a unique blend of Shiraz, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon has won this fantastic award above all other blended wines from across the globe. Named in honour of Pirramimma founder Alexander Campbell Johnston, the 2007 ACJ is only the second release of this limited production wine, the first being the Gold Medal winning 2004 vintage. Only produced if varietal parcels display outstanding character, the barrel select 2007 ACJ was limited to 500 dozen.

"With 120 years of winemaking history, it is a great achievement from the team to win any Trophy in such a competitive industry, but to win a major Trophy at one of the Worlds most important Wine Competitions is a tremendous result for McLaren Vale and Pirramimma" Geoff said.
