Wine Summary Image

Dino Carletti entered the world of viticulture in 1961 to maintain a living contact with the place and culture of his origins. The name Poliziano pays homage to the 15th Century poet Angelo Ambrogini who hailed from Montepulciano and was knicknamed "Poliziano”.

Dino’s son Federico Carletti took over in 1980 and has since grown Poliziano from 22 to 240 hectares, of which 130 hectares are dedicated to the production of sangiovese or "prugnolo gentile’ as it is locally known, planted predominately on the southern flank of Montepulciano.

Today, the Poliziano wines evoke the historic tradition of the land, but at the same time speak eloquently to the modern world. Theirs is a developing narrative… they retain their original labels, but have matured and evolved over time, always with the objective of uncompromising quality and expression of terroir.

Expert Reviews

Huon Hooke

91 Points

Deep red colour with a tint of purple. The bouquet is fresh, clean and savoury, less primary than Australian sangios, the palate taste again savoury, medium to full-bodied and firm, with sappy tannins and a certain Italianate sapidity. A very tasty wine and very much in style for Chianti.

Winery Tasting Notes

Appearance

Deep red with a tint of purple.

Aroma

The bouquet is fresh, clean and savoury.

Palate

Black fruited wine with wonderful acidity and fine, ripe tannins, making it ideal for earlier drinking and the perfect food wine.

Food Matching

Serve at around 16-18 degrees Celsius. A very drinkable and versatile Chianti Colli Senesi, ideal to accompany antipasto, pasta dishes, risotto and pizza. Try it with char-grilled peppers and melanzane (eggplant), roast rabbit or chicken, or Scarmorza (fresh Tuscan cheese) grilled on an open fire.

Winery Profile

Established in 1961, Poliziano has in the space of forty years moved from the original nucleus of 22 hectares purchased by owner Dr Federico Carletti's father, to 240 hectares, of which 120 are cultivated with DOC and DOCG vineyards.

Federico Carletti is also responsible for the recent leaps forward in terms of quality, especially over the past 10-15 years. Graduating in the late 1970's in Agriculture followed by a few years work experience in Northern Italy, Federico returned to Poliziano, inspired by the challenge presented by a market finally recognising quality rather than just quantity in Italian wines. Federico claims: "I see myself as a farmer, because I am convinced great wines originate in the vineyard."

Less favourably situated vineyards have thus been eliminated with significant replanting of selected clones and rootstocks, in planned planting layouts complemented by specific pruning techniques, forming the major part of Federico's improvements. A newly established winery at Montepulciano Stazione is the latest development. Technically advanced state of the art equipment and carefully chosen oak for maturation, produce the optimum result for the Poliziano wines, made from 100% estate grown fruit.
