Wine Summary Image

Grown in our close-planted blocks our Hard Hill Road vineyard in Great Western, Our Close-Planted Shiraz is of an intensity and denseness unique in the Grampians region.

These Shiraz grapes were vinified in small batches and fermented with a good portion of whole berries and whole bunches. We hand-plunged the fermentations twice per day, and once the fermentation was complete the wine sat on its skins for another month or so before pressing. The wine then rested in French and American 500L puncheons for up to 18 months.

Intense blackberry, dark chocolate, black pepper and liquorice, followed by tar, gun smoke and cured meats, with a long and rich finish.

While already presenting a seamless balance of fruit depth and tannin, it will continue to entwine and gain further complexity with decades of cellar time.

Ultra-close planting of 5000 vines per one-third/ha, and only a production of 250 dozen. Exceptionally deep and bright crimson-purple; it is no less strikingly intense, its mouthfeel supple, velvet and full of spices sewn through black fruits. Then, after all that, the tannins are so fine and soft they leave you wondering where they went.

Winery Tasting Notes

Built to last, this Shiraz has a tightly woven fabric of intense flavours including blackberry, liquorice, dark chocolate and black pepper. Secondary notes of tar, gun smoke and cured meats add an element of the exotic which sits comfortably atop a fine tannin backbone. The underlying structure is refined, and complex, with layers of flavours providing a rich, long and evolved finish.
