Wine Summary Image

A near perfect growing season produced excellent fruit across all varieties. A cold dry winter followed by a relatively dry summer saw crop levels lower than normal, but the quality of the fruit was high. White and red varieties all performed well, with perfect ripening conditions during harvesting. While crops were down it was still another great vintage with the quality being similar to 2014-2017 vintages.

Another vintage that has big shoes to fill on the back of the numerous gold medals and trophies that both the 2016 & 2017 vintages received. However, Jacob thinks that we have succeeded in delivery the same high quality standard. The 2018 has many of the same characteristics as previous vintages, and shows that Riesling can still do well in the warm dry years.

Expert Reviews

94/100 Huon Hooke, Nov 2018 Light straw colour with an intense dried flower and green lime aroma, the palate dry and lean and restrained, a bit straightforward at this stage but promising to do more in time. A tight, unevolved youngster. This needs time and will be very good.”

5 STARS. Winestate Magazine Nov 2018 Perfumed citrus bouquet with faint passionfruit / tropical nuances. Nicely rounded palate- balanced and refined with well-focussed and persistent pure citrus flavours.”

94/100 QWINE, Oct 2018 Oh wow. We have a live one here. Sizzling Riesling dancing on point. Great Riesling is not supposed to come from Mudgee, right? The gang at Robert Stein have put that preconception to the side and have forged a fabulous reputation for this variety. A myriad of awards seem to follow this wine around, and it’s not hard to see why. A polished gem, whiffs of tonic, Jasmine flowers and bath salts accelerate on opening before waves of citrus fruit and beautifully balanced acidity make this an absolutely delicious wine. Add talc feels to a long and moreish finish and your want for refreshment is quickly cured. Brilliant stuff.”

94/100 Wine Reviewer, Nov 2018 Impressive as usual, the 2018 release from Robert Stein continues a fine vein of form for the iconic Mudgee producer. A light yellow with a nose that is geared around finely toned citrus fruits, crushed slate and jasmine. There is an understated elegance to the wine, even whilst at it’s most youthful when citrus and mineral acidity are on full show it maintains an expansive mouthfeel with floral edged citrus fruits, the finish is long and generous.”

Words from a Wineglass, Oct 2018 “Terrific, intense nose. Citrus with a nice lemon sherbet touch. There was a hint of sweetness here too that caused me to turn the bottle around and check out the ‘scale’ on the back of the bottle. It indicated a hint of residual sugar which didn’t surprise me. On the palate it’s dry and limey to start with and so deliciously Rieslingy (not sure if that will catch on). The finish is something else and deserves its own paragraph. That intensity I mentioned earlier, is not just on the nose. It seamlessly forms part of a great, long finish where a deft touch of sweetness balances it out perfectly.”

The Grape Hunter, Nov 2018 “This main-stream Robert Stein 2018 Riesling pushes all the appropriate varietal and regional buttons. The 5 Gold medals and 4 Trophies [to date] are well-deserved and amply justified. Floral & citrus flavours leap to the fore.

A slight mid-palate of marzipan savouriness, zingy natural acidity and mouth-filling opulence of fruit all contribute to deliver yet another wine of high calibre, quality and longevity crafted by winekaker Jacob Stein. A very enjoyable Riesling which offers current varietal freshness but will evolve with some cellaring.”

18.75/20 Vinonotebook, Nov 2018 Aromas of lime flesh/juice, green tea, fennel and mandarin citrus. Solid drive through the generous mid-palate. Limes and almost grapefruit citrus flesh, minerally rocks with plenty of juicy acidity yet a balanced length of flavour.”

Winery Tasting Notes

A classical dry Riesling, with all the lime and fruit characters you would expect, and a crisp and racy finish with a slight touch of sweetness. This wine has the ability to age beautifully.
