Expert Reviews

James Halliday

95 Points

Light straw-quartz hue. Not the easiest of vintages, but you'd never know it given the intensity, the resonance and length of this vibrant, juicy wine. The 30th vintage, and I buy the back label comment 'the wine is better now than at any time in our 30 years'.

Winery Tasting Notes

Typically it shows a pink grapefruit character, concentration and mid-palate texture, which reflect the carefully selected sites and hand harvesting during the small window of perfect ripeness. 2019 was a standout year. The growing season weather behaved well overall, giving us well-balanced acidity and good flavour development in the pink grapefuit, lavender spectrum.

A great aperitif or serve with seafood. Best drinking within two years Ideal serving temperature: 6-8°C Produced using sustainable practices

Winery Profile

5 Star Winery - Halliday Wine Companion

Shaw + Smith began over a long lunch in 1989 when cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith decided to realize a long held dream to make wine together. They specialise in Sauvignon Blanc, a single vineyard Chardonnay, cool climate Shiraz and more recently small batches of Riesling and Pinot Noir.

The Vineyards

M3 Vineyard

Shaw + Smith's 42 hectare M3 Vineyard at Woodside was planted in 1994 and takes its name from owners Michael and Matthew Hill Smith and cousin Martin Shaw. This vineyard consistently produces outstanding Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc with great concentration and fruit purity. All grapes are hand picked. The soils are sandy loam over red-yellow clay with some shale.Average altitude 420 metres.

Balhannah Vineyards

In 1999 Shaw + Smith bought this picturesque 46 hectare property between Balhannah and Hahndorf. In 2000 the winery was built and Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Riesling were planted. All grapes are hand picked. The soil is free draining sandy loam over red clay with underlying quartzite and shale. Average altitude 420 metres.

Top New Release Australian Whites

93 Points

From a difficult year, Shaw + Smith has managed to produce a very creditable sauvignon, which may not be a cracker like the ’18, but isn’t far behind. Pale hued, with a lifted tropical fruit aroma leading into an intense palate of lemon and lime over tropical notes.
