Wine Summary Image

Pinot Noir is dead sexy. Enigmatic, because it requires the right vineyard sites in cooler regions and is unforgiving of sloppy viticulture. Inspiring, because it does not conform to formulaic winemaking but requires imagination as much as experience. Frustrating, as the slightest mistake can have disastrous consequences. When everything comes together the resultant wines are seductive, addictive and memorable.

The Great Southern has some fantastic sites for Pinot Noir and the 2017 Wide Open Road is 100% single vineyard from our Mount Barker vineyard. There are 2 clones we use: the ubiquitous “droopy” clone so named for its relaxed growing habits and 115 from Dijon, a relatively new clone in WA. The droopy clone is renowned for producing pinot with structure and length, the 115 clone adds aromatics and texture.

Winery Tasting Notes

The 2017 Wide Open Road Pinot Noir is an early release style of Pinot Noir owing as much to Cru Beaujolais as to Mercurey. A bright red hue, the 2017 Wide Open Road is another evolution in the early drinking Pinot Style we are aiming to achieve. Lifted strawberry lozenges, maraschino cherry and stalky complexity lead to a creamy textured palate with fine sappy Pinot tannin. Long and complex, like a Peter Greenaway film.

Snake and Herring was founded in 2011 by two wine industry junkies, Redmond “Herring” Sweeny and Tony “Snake” Davis. Compelled to walk away from their professional roles at the same time, Redmond and Tony decided to embark on a journey to create their own wine label. Over a parcel of epic Porongurup Riesling, an idea began to form. Many late-night texts were exchanged and early morning vineyard rendezvous arranged and before long Snake + Herring was created and a Porongurup Riesling born.

Like a good wine, Redmond and Tony are a well-balanced team. Tony tends to be dreamy, geeky, moved by the magnificence of science in wine. Capturing and bottling the best of fruit from each site and vintage really ignites him. Redmond has an agricultural and accounting background as well as a forklift driver's ticket and he's not afraid to use it. He knows the market, he knows how to sell wine and thankfully he has a cracking palate.

This partnership has seen Snake + Herring achieve great success, with their latest triumph being the opening of Yarri Restaurant + Bar Dunsborough with Sal Davis and awarded chef Aaron Carr at the helm.
