Coleraine derives its name from the Coleraine vineyard, home of John and Wendy Buck of Te Mata Estate. John’s late grandfather was born in Coleraine in Northern Ireland and the name has been maintained through the family home to the wine. A single vineyard wine until 1989, Coleraine is an assemblage of the finest wines produced from distinct plots within Te Mata Estate’s oldest Havelock Hills vineyards first planted in 1892.

Expert Reviews

Sam Kim

97 Points

With stunning sophistication and complexity, this meticulously composed red shows beautifully lifted aromas of dark and purple fruit intensity together with seductive notes of cedar, cigar, cocoa and violet on the nose. The palate exhibits outstanding weight and depth, while remaining graceful and poised, leading to an extremely long finish, backed by fine, chalky tannins. 73% cabernet sauvignon and 27% merlot. At its best: 2025 to 2035.

Winery Tasting Notes

Appearance

Saturated, dark ruby with a neon-purple edge.

Aroma

Coleraine ’17 tantalizes with fragrant ripe cherry and fresh, black plum aromatics.

Palate

The bouquet blossoms over a silky palate laden with lavender, sandalwood, cigar box, juniper and wild blackberry. With typically-refined tannins and a modern, pure, ripe-fruit freshness, Coleraine ’17 is energetic, supple and lithe.

Winery Profile

Te Mata Estate is New Zealand’s oldest winery, dating from the early 1890s. It is a New Zealand family-owned winery – a true estate, specialising in grape growing and winemaking from its nine Hawke’s Bay vineyards. It is acknowledged as one of only five icon wineries in New Zealand.

Under the direction of John Buck, Te Mata Estate has, over nearly thirty years, produced a stunning array of red and white wines including famous labels such as Coleraine, Awatea cabernets/merlots, Bullnose syrah, Elston chardonnay, Cape Crest sauvignon blanc and, launched in 2009, Zara viognier. Te Mata Estate has also developed a unique single vineyard from which it produces its Woodthorpe wines.

Te Mata Estate makes wines from hand-harvested grapes from its own vineyards. These vineyards are all located in Hawkes Bay (within 40 minutes drive of the winery) and under the direct control of Te Mata Estate’s viticultural team.

Total land area: 600 acres (240 hectares). Total planted vineyard area: 300 acres (120 hectares).
