Wine Summary Image

Vintage Conditions - Winter rainfall was light yet consistent, leading in to a warm, dry spring, with good flowering and fruit set allowing for even berry development. Summer was relatively cool, with January rains providing vines with a much needed drink. Fine, mild conditions ensured long, cool ripening, resulting in fleshy, aromatic and fruit-filled wines.

Maturation - 14% was matured with French oak to enhance structure and complexity, while maintaining fruit character and vibrancy.

In his heyday, Wolfgang Blass was confident and charismatic – just like his wines. He pushed winemaking boundaries, revolutionising the way Australians enjoyed wine. Fifty years on the world has changed, but Wolf’s spirit hasn’t, continuing to motivate and encourage our next generation winemakers to uphold his legacy.

Inspired by a new wave of unconventional winemaking, Blass by Wolf Blass was born. Hand-crafted wines in the spirit of contemporary style and experimentation.

Colour - Crimson with purple hues

Nose - An aromatic nose of dark red plums, mulberries and blueberries, with gentle notes of cedary spice.

Palate - Medium bodied, with bright, fleshy berry fruits supported by subtle, creamy oak, leading in to a fine velvety finish.

Food Match - Great with spiced lamb cutlets with pomegranate salsa, or spaghetti with pork and fennel meatballs.

Peak Drinking - Enjoyable on release or will develop complex, integrated flavours with careful short term cellaring.

Winery Profile

Award Winning Winery

Wolf Blass Wines has grown from a humble tin shed to become one of the world's most successful and awarded wineries.

Wolf Blass was created in 1973 when Wolf started his own business, purchasing a 2.5 acre land holding with an old army shed outside Nuriootpa, at the northern end of the Barossa Valley.

In researching the name Bilyara, Wolf learned it was the Aboriginal name for "Eaglehawk" and given the eagle was also the national emblem of Germany, he decided his wines would carry the Eagle - a legacy that continues today and into the future.

Wolf Blass Wines won three consecutive Jimmy Watson Trophies with Black Label, generating substantial publicity and hype. In 1999, Wolf Blass Black Label made history, becoming the only wine to win the coveted Jimmy Watson Trophy an unprecedented four times.

From this time onwards, growth has been impressive and inspiring with Wolf Blass winning a grand total of more than 3,000 awards at national and international wine shows, including most recently, International Red Winemaker of the Year at the 2008 International Wine Challenge in London.

Wolf Blass Wines have a tradition of quality, character and consistency from the refined and elite Platinum Label, and the majestic and complex Black Label through to delicate Rieslings and crisp Chardonnays.
