Only our very best parcels of Chardonnay are chosen for our Styx Gully. For the 2017 vintage all the fruit was from our Langton vineyard; blocks 25 & 24.

It was a cool season and vintage was much later than average with the Chardonnay not harvested until late March. It was fermented in French oak; a combination of ~40% new, 30% once used and 30% older with the barrels stirred regularly for maximum lees contact over its eight month maturation period. In a departure from previous years, a portion of this wine did go through malo but with a very neutral strain; it softened the higher than usual acidity without the development of overly strong ‘butterscotchy’ characters.

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour:A bright, light gold straw colour.

Aroma:Quite pungent with rich aromas of cashew nut and the typically varietal stone fruit characters of nectarine and yellow peach, complemented by subtle oak.

Palate:This is a cool climate Chardonnay with great freshness and texture. Our Styx has great mouthfeel and good weight on the palate with those delicious stone fruit flavours. Entirely barrel fermented, this has contributed to its rich texture and palate weight while the moderate amount of malolactic has ensured the wine retains its freshness and good acidity.

Cellar Potential:Beautiful drinking now and over the next 6 years or so.

Winery Profile

Located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, West Cape Howe is the most southerly point, rising some 250 metres above the Southern Ocean. It is thought that the first explorers to this coastline were Dutch seafarers in 1627 aboard their 'Fluyt' class vessel "Gulden Zeepaard" (Golden Seahorse).

The winery is named after this magnificent landmark to pay respect not only to the natural beauty of the region, but also in recognition of the extreme influence of the Southern Ocean on the area's viticulture. The rugged coastline is home to some stunning white beaches, sheltered coves and great rock climbing sites.

West Cape Howe Wines is owned by a partnership including Gavin Berry (until 2004, senior winemaker at Plantaganet), and viticulturist, Rob Quenby. It was founded in 1997 and soon became one of the fastest growing wine brands in Western Australia, now producing around 60,000 cases annually. Over time, it has acquired some of the oldest vineyard resources in the state, giving it unrivalled access to the best and most consistent quality fruit that the cool Great Southern wine region has to offer.
